Pros

  • Affordable.
  • Doubles iPhone 7 battery life.
  • Solid, grippy design.

Cons

  • Bulky.
  • Blocks Lightning port.

The iPhone 7 is a great phone, but it doesn't win any awards when its comes to battery life. That's where battery cases like the ZeroLemon Slim Juicer come in. It adds an extra 4,000mAh of battery capacity in a durable build, doubling the battery life of your phone for just $49.99. It's bulkier than some alternatives like the Flux Battery Case and the Mophie Juice Pack Air ($69.99 at Amazon) , but it also costs significantly less, making it our Editors' Choice.

Design and Features

The Slim Juicer ( at Amazon) is your fairly standard black plastic battery case. It has a main section with the battery, and a snap-on front piece to hold your phone in place. Getting the phone in and out is fairly easy—just lift the front piece off from the bottom, slide your phone in, and snap it back on. The case feels sturdy and offers a nice, grippy finish, but it's not rated for drop protection.

You Can Trust Our Reviews
Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test.

Once your phone is in, you'll notice the Slim Juicer isn't quite so slim. It measures 6.0 by 2.8 by 0.6 inches (HWD), which is roughly the same size as the Juice Pack Air (5.9 by 2.8 by 0.7 inches). But it's a lot heavier due to its higher battery capacity, weighing 5.3 ounces compared with the Juice Pack's 3.5 ounces. You can definitely feel that extra weight in your pocket. Neither case comes close to the svelte Flux (5.5 by 2.7 by 0.4 inches, 2.0 ounces) for barely-there comfort.

The power button and volume rocker are both covered by mushy plastic buttons, and there's a cutout to access Ringer switch. A speaker grille on the front redirects the iPhone's downward-projecting audio toward you. The bottom of the case has a micro USB charging port (a micro USB cable is included). It means you can't use wired headphones (Lightning or with a 3.5mm dongle) without taking the case off.

The back of the Slim Juicer has a power button that turns it on and off when you hold it down. Pressing it once makes the four LEDs to its left light up to show how much power you have left.

Performance and Conclusions

The Slim Juicer's 4,000mAh battery added 5 hours, 48 minutes of runtime to our iPhone 7 while streaming full-screen video over LTE at maximum brightness. That's the best result we've seen, effectively doubling the phone's standalone battery life (5 hours, 45 minutes) and outperforming the Juice Pack Air by nearly two hours (3 hours, 49 minutes). The 1,500mAh Flux Battery Case is similarly left in the dust at 2 hours, 14 minutes.

The ZeroLemon Slim Juicer case offers the most battery for your buck. That isn't to say it's not worth shopping around, though. If battery life isn't your number one priority, the Juice Pack Air offers wireless charging and a magnetic back. And the super-thin Flux offers easy access to your phone's Lightning port. A portable backup battery, meanwhile, delivers extra power without increasing the size of your phone at all. That said, the Slim Juicer doubles your iPhone 7's battery life for half the price of many alternatives. That makes it an Editors' Choice in our book.
