Apple And Wistron Are Certified In India, Could Easily Offset Delays In High-End iPhone 8

This article is more than 6 years old.

Apple original equipment manufacturer, Wistron, has received official certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to assemble/manufacture the iPhone SE in Bengaluru starting toward the end of this month or early May, according to an article in the deccanhearald.com.

The BIS certification is for Model A1723, which, according to sources, is for the iPhone SE, under brand number R-62000612, certified under IS 13252.

The 4-inch iPhone SE is the small screen phone available from Apple.

"But with its great screen with brightness and colors, it is an ideal phone for those who are using Apple for the first time. It will go well with Indian buyers," says Amit Misra, an IT analyst from Bengaluru.

"The iPhone 6 or iPhone 7 Plus, which is actually a proverbial giant, are widely used for social media, browsing the web, emails, games, and watching videos. As part of capturing the India market, Apple recently discounted the iPhone SE to Rs 19,999," Misra says.

The sub-INR 20,000 market is the key to Apple's plans for India going forward. By breaking into the sub-20K rupees segment, Apple is hoping to make significant gains in market share in India going forward.

The manufacturing of the iPhone SE has been commissioned to a company named ICT Service Management Solutions, which is owned by Wistrom, as per information contained in the BIS filing with an address for the unit in Yeshwanthpur, Bengaluru.

"Apple's move for approaching the BIS certification is primarily due to its decision to go ahead with changes in its product configuration in India. As per my knowledge the product to be launched in India will have certain changes compared with its current international model," said a BIS official.

Watch on Forbes:

I wonder how many Wall Street analysts have factored in "Assembled/Manufactured in India" iPhones into their estimates for this year and beyond?

More importantly, given all the chatter about delays in the top-of-the-line iPhone 8 (5.8 inch model with 3-D sensing capabilities and much more), could expected far greater sales versus current expectations for Apple in India be a possible offset or more?

Words to the wise.
