PC shipments make first slight gain in years, HP retakes top spot according to IDC

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), traditional PC shipments (which includes workstations, notebooks, and desktops) have experienced an unexpected rise for the first quarter of 2017, defying projections.

IDC had predicted that shipments of PCs would shrink by 1.8% for the first quarter of the year, at the moment however, shipments are on course to do the exact opposite. Year-over-year growth in shipments currently stands at 0.6%, which isn't a monumental growth step. That said, PC shipments had dropped 30% from their peak in 2011, and this will be the first time since early 2012 that PCs have made even a slight comeback.

There are two main reasons for this according to IDC. First of all, since 2012, many people have been using tablets, smartphones and other devices for things they would have used a PC for previously. Second of all, the PCs themselves are lasting longer, and thus aren't being replaced as frequently.

According to IDC's statistics, HP overtook Lenovo for the top spot in total shipments globally, placing Dell third, Apple fourth and Acer fifth, although competition is strong:

IDC believes that according to their projections of commercial needs as well as the signs from this first quarter, PC shipments are set to experience a small growth this year.
