Google Photos Has Significant iOS Upgrade

Following
This article is more than 6 years old.

With the latest update, the Google Photos app in iOS adds an important feature which really ought to have been there for some time already.

While the Google Photos app is generally very good at sharing content from both Android and iOS alike, but unlike iOS’s built-in Photos app, Google’s version has always lacked the ability to beam images and videos to your TV via AirPlay.

Thankfully, this omission has now been rectified. In the latest update, dated April 24th, Google has added AirPlay support to the app, allowing you to view your photos wirelessly on your big screen via an Apple TV box (or any other AirPlay compatible receiver).

It’s commendable to see Google playing nice with competing ecosystems in this way - you’ll still have to jump through hoops to send photos from the standard iOS Photos app to a Chromecast, for example, as it’s not possible to cast from iOS without installing a third party app.

However, If you don’t have an Apple TV set up already, you may find it cheaper to just buy a Chromecast and use that to send images to your TV instead via Google Photos.

The new Google Photos update also includes unspecified performance improvements, so there’s something in it for everybody even if you don’t use AirPlay.
