The world's largest privately held tech company Dell Technologies plans to set up a research and development hub (R&D) in Pune. This will be the American company's fourth R&D center in India after Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.

"Dell already has a center in Pune but will be setting up a R&D hub there soon," Alok Ohrie, President, India Commercial, Dell EMC told reporters at the company's flagship event Dell EMC World in Las Vegas.

Dell Technologies is result of the $67 billion merger between Dell Inc and EMC in 2015. Ohrie added that Dell Technologies employs over 24,000 people in India.

"India plays a key role in research and development in Dell's latest products including the 14th generation of its PowerEdge server," said Ohrie. The company previewed the 14th generation of its PowerEdge server line at the event which is expected to hit the market later this year.

Dell Technologies Chairman Michael Dell emphasized that India's importance within the new entity hadn't diminished. "India was our third largest market but when we combined with EMC and VMware, it did not become our third largest market anymore. It became smaller not because the market for Dell EMC shrank but because some other markets are bigger," said Dell. "But India has $1.2 billion people and I am confident India will keep growing," he added.

Dell also picked out software defined data centers and the adoption of 5G networks as two key trends that he sees in the coming years. "Software defined data centers will be the de facto standard," said Dell. "5G networks are not about the ability to talk on phones faster or taking or storing more pictures. It's about data. It will create a new wave of distributed computing," added Dell.
