Windows 10 continued its growth last month, and data offered by Valve for its gaming platform Steam revealed that Microsoft’s latest operating system finally surpassed 50 percent market share.

Specifically, the 64-bit version of Windows 10 is running on 50.33 percent of the systems where Steam was installed, a growth of 1.28 percent from the previous month. The 32-bit version, on the other hand, dropped 0.06 percent to 0.90 percent share.

Runner-up is the 64-bit flavor of Windows 7, which declined 0.21 percent to 32.05 percent, while all the other versions are very far behind with less than 7 percent share. Overall, Windows is powering 96.24 percent of the computers used to play games on Steam.

macOS and Linux very far behind

And what’s more important is that Windows 10 has no more, no less than 17 times more users on Steam than all versions of Apple’s macOS combined. At this point, only 2.95 percent of users on Steam are running macOS, with 10.12.5 currently the top version with 1.18 percent share.

Linux is currently at 0.72 percent share, a drop of 0.09 percent, and the top version is Ubuntu 16.04 with 0.21 percent share.

As far as Windows is concerned, Microsoft has no reason to worry, especially because Windows 10 is expected to continue its growth in the coming months. The Windows 10 Creators Update, which brings lots of improvements for gamers, is currently being rolled out in stages to users across the world, while another major update is due in September with another series of exciting updates as well.

Truth be told, Windows remains the platform of choice for PC gaming and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, though it’s very clear that Microsoft does not afford to rest on its laurels. Not with both macOS and Linux also getting support for more games on Steam and with users always looking for alternatives to Windows.
