Microsoft Says It Has Identified Surface Pro Hibernation Issue

Good news for anyone who is suffering from the recently-disclosed hibernation bug in the new Surface Pro: Microsoft says it has identified the problem. And it will soon issue a fix.

As you may recall, several hundred people who purchased the new Surface Pro complained in Microsoft’s support forums that the device was shutting down while they were working. At the time, Microsoft said that it was investigating the issue.

One week later, they appear to have figured it out.

“Wanted to provide a quick update,” a Microsoft post dated July 10 in the support forums notes. “We believe we have identified the issue, and are currently testing a fix that will be delivered via Windows Update.”

Today, there’s another update addressing the fact that Patch Tuesday came and went without a patch.

“Just wanted to provide additional information that this fix was not included in the 7/11 Windows update, as testing still continues. I will update this posting when the update is available, also the Surface Pro Update History page will also be updated with the details when it launches.”

This type of speed is appreciated given the silence and slowness that accompanied previous Surface issues. Hopefully this really fixes the problem.

    <p>I have the opposite issue. If I close my Surface type cover there's about a 75% chance that it will wake up again in a timely fashion, or at all. Once every couple of days I have to hard reset it because I can't tell whether it's resuming from hibernate; there's no power light or any indication of its status. Surface Pro has many benefits but reliability is not one of them.</p>

It was probably about once a week if I hadn't rebooted. I'd hit the power button, the display would turn on to a black screen, and then nothing. Had to hard reset. This was with hibernate disabled, so if you are having the same problem, my guess is your issue is not going to be fixed by this patch. </p>

    <p>Windows has ALWAYS been plagued by hibernation errors — I have yet to hear on ANY Windows computer that always hibernates correctly — going back years, and years….</p>

I just don't see the value, especially with the hibernate file taking up valuable space on smaller SSDs. Sleep is fine, and if the machine is transported, I close all programs and just take a few minutes to reopen what I need. </p>

It's only gotten better over the years, and with Windows 8, shutting down logs you out and then puts the system into hibernation by default. It works for all the millions of users out there using Windows 8/10. It's fine.</p>

      <blockquote><a href="#144025"><em>In reply to Pbike908:</em></a></blockquote><p>The key issue I've had with hibernation in windows has been that the drivers/device state dont' seem to behave well when coming out of hibernation -specifically graphics cards and their drivers. My Win7 machine would always display unstable, odd graphics behavior when I came out of hibernation – so I just disabled hibernation and only shut down the desktop.</p>

    <p>Hope this isnt just a Surface fix. Have an old i5 Samsung ATIV (similar hardware to Surface inside) and it does the same since creative update installed. Only happens on Battery though, wake it up and there's still 30-50% power remaining so not low power</p>

    <p>Sounds like those new commercials – "I'm just a security monitor – I tell you I know the bank is being robbed, but don't stop it…"</p><p><br></p><p>What's more intriguing is WHY do only some systems develop this problem – using different component sources for the same function? Truly a bug in only part of the silicon? Or is it a house of cards that is susceptible to different waterfalls under different circumstances?</p>
