AMD Ryzen 3 Pricing Leaked: Bargain $100 Overclockable Quad-Cores Intel's Biggest Threat Yet?

This article is more than 6 years old.

Intel's problems could be about to get worse if the latest leaked pricing information is anything to go by. A post on Reddit spotted by Wccftech claims that the Ryzen 3 1300X - a quad-core CPU with base and boost frequencies of 3.5GHz and 3.7GHz could cost as little as $129.

The user also claims to have pricing details of the Ryzen 3 1200, which is the lower end part with base and boost frequencies of 3.1GHz and 3.4GHz - it will retail for just $109, which is half the price of Intel's Core i5 quad-cores such as the Core i5-7500. The latter currently costs $205 on Newegg.

We know little else about the Ryzen 3 CPUs, but perhaps more interestingly, is that they don't seem to have the clock speed deficits against Intel's equivalents that the more expensive Ryzen CPUs do. For example, the Core i5-7500,  can only boost to a maximum of 3.8GHz and 3.6GHz across all four cores. Even more interesting is that all of Intel's CPUs south of the Core i5-7600K, with the exception of the poor-value Core i3-7350K, are multiplier locked - you can't overclock them.

With all AMD CPUs being overclockable and all that I've tested so far managing to get to 3.9GHz across all cores, this could mean AMD actually has the advantage in clock speed, at least what's attainable with overclocking, and Intel will be a very tricky situation at the low end. AMD's Ryzen 3 CPUs cost the same as Intel's Core i3 and Pentium dual-core CPUs, but have twice the number of physical cores.

A lot will depend on the amount of cache the Ryzen 3 CPUs have, but with what we know so far, Ryzen 3 could be even more of a headache for Intel than Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7 or even Ryzen Threadripper.
