Intel's Coffee Lake CPUs Not Compatible With Z270 Motherboards Says ASRock

This article is more than 6 years old.

PC enthusiasts are waiting for several exciting products to hit retailer shelves in the coming months, but one of the  most anticipated - Intel's Coffee Lake six-core CPUs, which are the company's successors to its current Skylake CPUs, will not be compatible with current motherboards.

Despite rumors of a possible trio of six-core CPUs using the same LGA1151 socket as current Skylake CPUs such as the Core i5-7600K, the likes of the supposed Core i7-8700K will not work in current Z270 chipset motherboards.

This is according to motherboard manufacturer ASRock, which replied to a Tweet on Twitter regarding Coffee Lake compatibility with one of the company's most recent motherboards.

AMD's Threadripper CPUs and more Intel Core i9 products are expected this month, but while Intel's mainstream Coffee Lake CPUs are expected much later, they're still a highly anticipated addition to Intel's line-up as they offer a 50% increase in core count - six compared to just four, over the current mainstream flagship CPU, the Core i7-7700K.

This should help them compete against AMD's Ryzen 5 six-core CPUs and the eight-core CPUs in the Ryzen 7 range, especially if like the Core i7-7700K they turn out to be able to hit higher frequencies than AMD when overclocking too.

However, the fact that they are probably not compatible with current motherboards means that there will be plenty of disappointed people who have bought Z270 motherboards recently that will need to upgrade to a likely Intel Z370 chipset motherboard in order to use a Coffee Lake CPU. I've spoken to Asus and MSI and so far they don't have an official stance on Coffee Lake compatibility.

In the meantime, I'll be back with AMD Threadripper coverage soon so make sure follow me here on Forbes, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus for the latest news.
