OneNote for Windows 10 August 2017 Feature Update Begins Rolling Out

Microsoft this week began rolling out the August 2017 Feature Update for OneNote for Windows 10, adding a number of improvements to this note-taking solution.

As Microsoft notes, these features are being made available to customers on a gradual basis. So may not get them immediately.

Here’s what’s new this month.

Text to Math. Those with an Office 365 subscription will see a new Text to Math option that lets you solve an equation you typed as text: Just select it using the Lasso Select button on the Draw tab and then choose Math.

Smart Lookup. To get definitions or more information from the web without leaving OneNote, just right-click a word or phrase and choose Smart Lookup from the context menu that appears.

Insert online pictures. Now you can safely insert photos and images from Bing image search without leaving OneNote. To do so, navigate to the Insert tab and select Pictures > Online. You can search for keywords in the Online Pictures pane to find the right image.

Tables of all shapes and sizes. Now you can add and delete rows and columns in tables. Plus, you can edit tables in other ways, by adding table shading or by sorting content.

More highlight colors. The highlighter tool is no longer limited to yellow: Now, you can use blue, green, red, and several other colors too.

Page Width. The new Page Width tool on the View tab helps you zoom in and out of your notes.

I wonder when, if ever, MS will add the ability to format a text container with a border?

There are workarounds, but it seems that this should be a easy item to implement.

So what's up with onenote for Windows 10 from the windows store and onenote as included in an office365 subscription? is Microsoft ever going to merge these into a single solution?

In reply to kshsystems:

Microsoft has said they are planning on bringing all the features from OneNote 2016 into the UWP OneNote. Development on OneNote 2016 has basically stopped.

Both OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS need Outlook integration (e.g. send email to OneNote and send Calendar item to OneNote to create Meeting Notes)

In reply to Chris_Kez:

Yea challenge there is registering work email vs. personal email, etc. And lack of ability to select notebook/section at time of sending, rather than filing in the back end.

RE meeting notes when instantiating from an outlook event (either in OneNote Desktop or Outlook) it does ask if you want to share or take your own, I always take in my own as I want the notes housed in my notebook, and don't want to share the entire notebook – if I want to share I'll just click the handy email page button, which creates the Email – automatically addressed to meeting invitees from calendar event.

OneNote is the poster child for MS UWP capabilities. The guy running this is committed to making this Windows Store app as functional as the desktop version, and he and his team are getting there. It shows you can do excellent Win 10 apps without just converting and wrapping a Win 32 application. You just have to wanna.

If Microsoft wants to move OneNote to UWP and away from the desktop they need to make sure it at least has all of the features from the desktop version. I bought my wife a Surface Laptop and she was using Windows 10s but she couldn't print things to OneNote with the UWP app and she uses that feature all the time. Since Microsoft put the full versions of every other office app (including Access) in the store but didn't put in OneNote she had to upgrade to Full Windows 10.
