AMD Releases Cheapest Ryzen Threadripper CPU: $549 For 8-Core 16-Thread Monster

AMD has released the final CPU in its 2017 rampage, which completes the Threadripper range with the 8-core, 16-thread Threadripper 1900X. The CPU is slated to retail for $549, which is $49 more than the flagship Ryzen mainstream CPU, the Ryzen 7 1800X.

The Threadripper 1900X might have the same number of cores and threads, but offers better specifications in a couple of areas to justify that extra $50 premium. You get 100MHz higher XFR boost, taking the maximum frequency up to 4.2GHz compared to 4.1GHz for the Ryzen 7 1800X. More importantly, though, the Threadripper 1900X is part of the X399 platform, which offers a massive 64 PCI-E lanes, while the Ryzen mainstream desktop CPUs only offer 24.

This fact gives AMD an advantage over Intel's high end desktop platform as there, you need too spend nearly twice as much before CPUs support the maximum number of PCI-E lanes, which for the X299 platform is 44 - still 20 less than Intel. This makes AMD's platform much better value, especially if you're primarily concerned with having more PCI-E lanes for multiple graphics cards or PCI-E based storage devices.

Meanwhile Intel has launched its 12-core CPU, the Core i9-7920X to little fanfare, but it is currently sitting on etailer's shelves, with Amazon offering it for just under $1200. This is considerably more than AMD's Threadripper 1920X 12-core CPU, which retails for $800. However, Intel's Core i9 CPUs have proven to be excellent overclockers and with a monstrous 18-core model due next month, it does look like Intel will regain the ultimate performance crown on the desktop, albeit for a high price for consumers.
