It’s been an epic year so far for smartphones and things are about to get even more interesting with the impending launch of .

The US technology firm looks set to lift the lid on its and it could be one of the most radically different smartphones to come out of Cupertino.

Once it arrives on shelves the iPhone 8 will go head-to-head with which already looks set to win a host of awards in 2017.

However, if all the latest leaks and rumours about the iPhone 8 turn out to be true, Samsung could face some stiff competition from its arch-rival.

Express.co.uk has been analysing the latest reports about the iPhone 8 and here’s five reasons why it could be better than the Galaxy S8.

Apple’s iOS 11

v Android is always going to cause fans of the rival software platforms to get involved in a heated debate.

However, Apple’s latest operating system looks set to bring a host of new features to its latest smartphone.

This blockbuster update, which will come pre-loaded on the iPhone 8, includes upgrades to Siri, Maps and Apple's camera.

In OS 11, Apple introduces a new technology called High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) that reduces the file size of every photo taken - this should reduce the amount of space used by photographs.

Apple Pay also gets a new feature which allows users to transfer money to each other via a simple tap on the screen.

Sadly for Samsung Galaxy S8 owners they appear to be stuck with Android Nougat.

This older OS has now been been superseded by Android Oreo and this new version of Google’s OS looks unlikely to to land on the S8 anytime soon.

There’s currently no word on when Galaxy devices will get this next generation OS from Google but past years have shown it can take months for the Korean firm to push out the changes.

2. New faster processor

Apple is renowned for producing some of the fastest brains in the business and the iPhone 8 could eclipse everything that has gone before it.

This new smartphone looks set to feature the update A11 processor which, if a recent report is to be believed, could make the S8 look like its chugging through treacle.

According to a screenshot, the latest Geekbench 4 test was taken on a phone running iOS 11 and an Apple A11 chipset running at 2.74GHz.

That all sounds very plausible based on the rumours around the next iPhone, although its worth always remembering that it would not take more than 10 minutes to PhotoShop this type of Geekbench score.

Hopefully that's not the case – since the resulting Geekbench score is jaw-droppingly good.

The alleged iPhone 8 racked-up a 4537 single-core and 8975 multi-core.

Compared to the scores for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 that powers most models of the Galaxy S8, that’s a colossal lead.

3. No curved display

There’s no doubting that the S8’s curved design is truly glorious.

With its Infinity Display curving gracefully around the sides of the phone there’s very little that looks anywhere as good.

From the leaks we’ve seen it appears unlikely Apple is following Samsung with a curved screen and, although this may be a disappointment to some, it could prove a smart move from the US firm.

Firstly, Samsung's edge-to-edge curved screen is prone to getting damaged incredibly easily and even received a poor score in Square Trade’s drop tests earlier this year.

In fact, during the test, the cracks become so bad they cover almost the entire front and rear of the phone making it almost unusable.

SquareTrade ended up rating the Galaxy S8 with a medium-high risk of breakability.

Along with getting cracked, when Express.co.uk reviewed the S8 we ran across a few websites that let words run over the dual-curves in the display, which can make text a little finicky to read.

There’s also a slightly frustrating blue light bleed that occasionally runs the length of the curve, especially on plain white webpages and settings menus.

Samsung had a similar issue with last year’s Galaxy S7 Edge with the company saying that due to the curved display, light can spread around to the curved areas of the screen.

4. Return of the dual-lens camera

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 8 looks set to feature a dual-lens rear camera.

This fabulous double snapper allows users to zoom and create DSLR-style depth of field in something Apple calls Portrait Mode.

It’s a great addition and is possibly one of the best smartphone cameras you can buy.

The iPhone 8 will, no doubt, take this to a new level with improved image quality and more features sure to be announced at Apple’s keynote.

Strangely, Samsung didn’t included a dual-lens camera on the S8 - something it has now addressed with the launch of Galaxy Note 8.

It was an odd decision not to feature a dual snapper on the S8 and this certainly gives the iPhone 8 the upper hand when it comes to photography.

5. No rear fingerprint scanner

Placing the fingerprint scanner on the rear of the Galaxy S8 is still a decision that baffles us.

And it’s not just why Samsung chose to do it but also where they put that seems so odd.

Putting this vital sensor right next to the camera was one of biggest criticisms of the S8 as it often leaves a mucky mess all over the lens.

With the giant screen covering almost the entire front of the phone, Samsung had to switch to rear-mounted scanner and it will be interesting to see how Apple combats this issue.

Rumours have suggested all manner of solutions such as a home button embedded under the display and a the use of facial/iris recognition to instantly unlock the device.

We’ll have to wait and see if any of these options can beat the humble home button so many of us love and use millions of times a day.
