No Istarted for gaming open and repair phones 3 yars ago...Apple are perfectly reparable look at fixit site...Android phones are completely glue assembled apart for battery....Anyway battery and screen are really simply to replace in last iPhone from (5 until now)

FWIW - The 8, 8+ and X all represent an unnecessary upgrade for me. I don’t like the idea of facial recognition. Big brother already has too much of our information. Almost bezel-less screen does nothing for me. And with regards to cameras, the more “AI” and other automated, formulaic processing they do to images, the less I want them.

I have tried to switch to Android numerous times. I always go back to iOS for my EDC personal devices. Why? Because being in IT, I make my living fixing and re-fixing all of the problems caused by a more “open” architecture. When I use my phone (6s plus) or tablet (iPad 2), I want the OS to get out of the way and simply allow me to use my chosen app without issues.

DaveE1, I have been using Apple since when... 1983? I once switched to Samsung Note 2 for a year just to see what Android would offer. But immediately came back to iPhone again, and I am using iPhone 7 Plus. I think that you are a brainless troll (or an Apple employee).
Most of the important features are stolen from Samsung. And most important parts in the iPhones are also from Samsung. So, I wonder whether it is actually an innovative product from Apple. I think not.

It is difficult to not joke after reading a coment like the one you post.
The one feature from samsung is the screen. And it is not stollen, but bought from them (in fact, it could be, not a Samsung screen, but a Samsung manufactured screen with some Apple IP, who knows).
The A11 is way ahead of what samsung does. Lots of Apple IP in it and not some generic ARM architecture. Face ID should be way ahead of what samsung does (to be confirmed with tests). Dual camera with a WA and a tele are not from Samsung and quite different that what other smartphone makers did (Huawei : color + B&W, LG : WA + super WA...) when introduced. Glass back are not from samsung either...

The border between improvement and innovation is thin and often hard to guess without a deep knowledge in the technology used. I mostly disagree with you. Here is an abstract example :
Two firms, A and B,
A and B start to build an innovative way to authenticate on a mobile device at the same time,
A release an half baked product one year later to be first on market,
B release its solution one year after A because they take time to do it properly,
And people like you calls A innovator and says B only brings improvement, while they start to work at the same time and their own solution is not dépendant of each other's work...

Border is thin between innovation and improvement. Even a device as disruptive as the first iPhone is in fact full of improvements : for example, the multitouch capacitive display, which is central in the device and define the whole user experience, can be considered as an improvement of old resistive touch screen. But the device as a whole completely redefined what is a smartphone (why it is called disruptive)

About face ID, either the smartphones you know are not sold elsewhere in the world, or you are talking about imperfect implementations, that even manufacturers are describing as secondary or not as advanced than touch ID (which is still the main way to unlock the device).
We are talking about a system which cannot be fooled by a photo or video, work close to 100% of time whatever the light (night, strong direct light), is quick, does not require you to old the phone like you would if you take a selfie, adapts to changes of your face, optionnally take care of your attention, and without sending anything to the cloud.
In summary, it is meant to just work without you thinking about it. This is the only way it would be good enough to replace touch ID. This is an innovation because it change the way people use their devices. Curent implementations are secondary and are not broadly used because they are less good than touch ID. They are just gimmicks.

About screen, I already adress the point. You state it is stolen, I said it is bought. What you sate is a nonsense.

About wireless charging, yes, Apple is a follower. No firm can lead in all domains. But the technology does not belong to Samsung, so it is not stolen either...

About Microsoft, do you use a surface product ? I used one : SP2. Not impressed. And besides SP1, by your own word, lots of improvement but no innovations in Surface pro. No innovation in surface laptop either.

M Chambers is mostly right and if you watch every keynote address and you read all the interviews, Apple goes into great detail of why they don't do things only to end up doing them later on and when they do, they act as though they invented it! Indeed, improvements. I'm not bashing Apple. Remember when Steve Jobs insisted that he doesn't want to make a larger iPhone and gave several reasons why. It was as though Apple would never go larger. I do remember hearing about quality levels and yields that Apple referred to.

Apple does not cater for, nor care for people who buy other products. Their statements are for within the Apple ecosystem. Other systems don't exist from Apple's point of view.

It is well known and Apple admits that they don't care whether they single-handily invent a given technology or a feature. But they take pride and get credits for realizing the potentials of new technologies and make them really useful. For example, everyone knows Apple did not invent the touch screen, but they show you why we now all need it because the technology was well integrated with software and hardware that all work together in the very first iPhone. And of course Apple also did not make the first smartphone, which was the blackberry.

Agree that the initial iPhone was revolutionary by the way it combined touch screen, just one button, sensors and connectivity/computing features in a phone. ... that's long time ago ...

Meanwhile other's already took the next step after "edge" towards "infinity" display. I doubt that something like sensors disrupting the frame would have been possible with the early iPhone designs. You can use earphones that have a Lightning jack or they sell little adapters that go from Lightning to mini-phone jack, so you can still use traditional earphones.

People made such a big deal about Apple dropping USB-A from the MacBook Pros, but you buy a few $4 USB-A to USB-C adapters and stick them on your cables and it's a non-issue.

cosinaphile: People don't analyze profit margins to make purchasing decisions. They don't pick something they don't like because that manufacturer is making less money on it.

The statistics are rather skewed. Apple has a giant profit share because they make money on all their phones. Samsung makes big profit margins on their high-end phones. The cheaper (mostly Android) phones are loss leaders. They each contribute with a small negative profit margin but so many are sold that they solidly affect the overall number due to volume.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 and I love it. I never cared or worried that Samsung was making good money on it. I bought it because it's the best phone for me.
The iPhone X looks great and I like seeing where Apple will take the industry.

It pretty much does all this except the ports (which would make it less water proof) and being a Mac. It doesn't need 8GB of RAM and more RAM is less battery life.

Why not this. That would be killer features:
- warerproof for usage in the bathtub
- plug for hairdryer or toaster

Duet or Astropad apps can give you a wired screencast type function on iPad so it's feasible to do that on an iPhone. You may even be able to do it now with Apple TV wirelessly every program I've used that allows for Remote Desktop access doesn't work very well wirelessly and that just for simple programs. I just don't think the tech is there yet.

If you want to take your phone surfing, swimming, etc get a dive housing because they would need to encase it in non-corrosive plastic to keep it from being destroyed by saltwater.

Everything else you mentioned seems to be things that will turn the phone into a brick.

As an amateur, I really like taking picture with my phone. Plus it is always with me.

I don't bother with compacts anymore. I have a GoPro Session 5 that's smaller than a golf ball and is waterproof. Plus my iphone 6s does a great job of taking snapshots.

When I need professional-quality photos (or as close as I can get) I use my 6D setup with a couple lenses.

Regardless of our complaints about technology, it's a really good time to be a photographer. Film was expensive and took time to process. Now we can photograph anything we want any time.

@mattz10 not really, I like my Canon G9X mark II and Nikon Coolpix A a lot.

@Mister J I wanna see your face when you have a really good picture made with your shiny iPhone but need some editing.

@MikeFairbanks GoPro could be a good device for videos but for photography it has the same limits of a camera phone.
