Have you been eyeing AMD's X399 enthusiast platform and the Ryzen Threadripper processors that accompany it, but couldn't muster the [financial] strength to make a purchase? Well, Amazon is looking to make that decision a bit easier by slashing the price of the range-topping Ryzen Threadripper 1950X by $120, dropping it down from $999 to $879.

That's a pretty nice discount for a relatively new processor, and only further cements the value proposition that the Ryzen Threadripper family represents compared to its Intel Core X competition. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X has 16 physical cores and is capable of executing 32 threads. The processor features a base clock of 3.4GHz and all-core boost frequency of 3.7GHz. The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X can boost up to 4.0GHz on four cores, and maintains an XFR frequency of 4.2GHz on four cores.

The most direct competition for the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X is the Intel Core i9-7960X (16 cores, 32 threads), which has an MSRP of $1,699. Amazon is selling the processor at this price, but is currently out of stock. Taking a quick look around the web, the Core i9-7960X doesn't appear to be discounted at all -- if you can manage to find it in stock.

Looking at the performance differential between the AMD and Intel processors that we've noted in our reviews, there's now less justification for the $820 price difference between the two. That money could be spent on a nice X399 motherboard, some high-performance memory with perhaps some money left over for a smokin' NVMe SSD.

We should also mention that AMD is also discounting the "lesser" Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, but by a far smaller amount. In this case, the retail giant has lopped $50 off the MSRP of the processor, pricing it at $749.
