Microsoft Edge Preview is Updated on iPhone

Those testing the Microsoft Edge Preview on the iPhone can install version 2.6 this week, adding a number of new features and improvements.

As you may recall, Microsoft announced that it would bring Microsoft Edge to Android and iOS about a month ago, timing the Preview release to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. It was initially available only on iPhone, but the software giant delivered its first Android version about a week later. Anyway, it’s a good idea, and it closes the loop on one of my biggest Edge complaints.

That said, the “iOS” bit is somewhat confusing as this is really an iPhone app; it doesn’t adapt to the bigger screen sizes or capabilities of any iPad. But it does work on the iPod touch as well.

If you are testing Microsoft Edge on iOS, head over to the TestFlight app and download the latest version, 2.6, which includes the following changes:

Battery usage optimization. Because some testers have complained about hot phones and battery life issues, Microsoft has made “a few optimizations” that should help.

Improved swipe navigation. Microsoft has improved the left/right swipe navigation in an unexplained way. That is, you can can swipe from the edges of the screen to emulate the Back and Forward buttons. There’s a prominent arrow display that appears now, but I’m not sure if that was there before.

Actions and activities extension support. Microsoft has added support for actions and activities extensions, such as sharing sites, saving sites to Notes, adding sites to Pocket, and more.

Bug fixes. As you should expect, Microsoft says it has “fixed a bunch of other bugs.”

In a related note, Microsoft also says that it has some issue with desktop view and is working on it.

If you’re not already testing Microsoft Edge on iPhone, you can sign-up for the Preview program here.

I'm waiting for the next Android Edge beta. The first one works better than Chrome, most of the time. Other times it just locks up. I expect those issues will be fixed soon. Are the iPhone users seeing a similar lockup issue, that happens when I tap on another link before the current one finishes loading?

Is Family Safety integrated? If so, this is huge…. that plus restrictions and it would save the $40 we pay per year for a filtered browser.

I am really digging the Android edge browser. I hope they release it for Android tablets soon I want to install this on my Samsung Note 8 – 8" tablet. Also I would like to have this same UI on the Windows small screen devices like my ASUS Vivo Note 8.

I'm going to give it a try, I like Edge in Windows 10 although wish it had auto-play blocking like Safari does. I hate auto play videos more than anything and will use whatever browser kills them best.

Wake me when books works. Not that I'm particularly interested in it, but if MS has any chance of selling books in the Store, they need to be readable on more than Windows Phones, laptops and desktops. Yes, I get that getting books from MS is probably ill conceived, but it is even worse, given the available reading options. If you could read then on Android and iOS phones/tablets, that would at least broaden the access.

Almost all iPhone users I've ever met cannot even be bothered to change the default ringtone…how many iPhone users are ever going to use a non-safari browser?

I am still on the 2.5 version on iOS. How do you update testflight apps?
