Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 preview build for the Redstone 4 update coming in the spring, and this time users in the Fast and the Skip Ahead rings are the ones that can give it a try.

Windows 10 build 17040 comes with several new features, including new options in the Settings app where you can adjust the brightness of SDR content on HDR displays.

“Starting with Build 17040, Windows now lets you adjust how bright SDR content appears when running in HDR mode on the desktop. On an HDR capable system, you will see a slider in the ‘HDR and advanced color settings’ page under Settings > System > Display. This is one of the improvements to HDR image quality that we have planned based on feedback from Insiders,” Microsoft explains.

Additionally, Microsoft is also introducing a new section in Settings that allows to configure cursors, pointers, and touch feedback from the Ease of Access category.

Touch keyboard improvements

The touch keyboard has received several refinements as well, and Microsoft has finally enabled shape writing for the wide keyboard as well. This feature is available in the majority of languages, and Microsoft is most likely working to add more in the coming updates.

There are also improvements to gestures. There’s a new insertion gesture that lets you add space between words and letters with just a small caret, as well as a new commit shape that looks like a 90-degree angle bracketing the end of the text.

There are several other changes and improvements, as well as known issues, and you can check them in full in the box after the jump.

As a reminder, the Windows 10 Redstone 4 update is projected to launch in the spring of the next year, and new features will continue to be shipped in the coming months as work on the project advanced quite quickly.
