HP's Chromebox G2 features the latest Intel processor and up to 16 GB of RAM

Aimed for the education, HP's Chromebox G2 can be equipped with the latest Intel processor and up to 16 GB of RAM. Overkill? Maybe.

TL;DR
  • HP announced the Chromebox G2, the follow-up to 2014’s Chromebook
  • The Chromebox G2 can be upgraded to Intel’s latest Core i7 and 16 GB of RAM
  • The Chromebox G2 will be available in April

After already unveiling a pair of Chromebooks, HP isn’t quite done with Google‘s Chrome OS, as the company announced the sequel to 2014’s Chromebox, the Chromebox G2.

The Chromebox G2’s exterior is relatively unassuming, and we wouldn’t blame you if you confused it with the Apple TV. That being said, the illusion falls apart when you spot the two USB 2.0 ports, three USB 3.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, headphone jack (oh my!), HDMI port, ethernet port, and SD card reader.

The real story is what’s under the hood — while the base configuration features Intel’s dual-core Celeron 3865U, you can step up to either the seventh-generation Core i5-7300U or the eighth-generation Core i7-8650U. Even better, thanks to the two memory slots, you can have up to 16 GB of RAM.

Internal storage options are limited — you can only pick between 32 GB and 64 GB of storage — though both options arrive in speedy M.2 SSDs.

Is equipping the Chromebox G2 with the latest Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 64 GB M.2 SSD a bit overkill? It sure is. Chrome OS doesn’t need such powerful internals to run effectively. At the same time, HP designed the thing for the classroom, so it makes sense to have such options.

Because of that, we aren’t sure whether the masses can purchase the Chromebox G2. We don’t even know how much the machine starts at. However, we’re sure exact pricing can be figured out either directly with HP or an authorized reseller.

HP’s Chromebox G2 will be available sometime in April, though we expect to see it during CES 2018 on the show floor, so stay tuned for more information as we get it.
