If you’re a social media junkie, the thought of being without something as vital as Facebook probably sends a shiver down your spine.

iPhone and iPad users have been reporting that their Facebook app has been crashing, leaving them unable to see pictures of their friends’ newborns or #newyearnewme statuses from those they went to school with.

Jokes aside, it is frustrating when you just can’t get an app to work. Especially when we pay hundreds of pounds for our devices and data plans.

Who does Facebook crash?

Although we might see Mark Zuckerberg as something of a cyborg, Facebook is still a piece of man-made software that can crash and get bugs.

If your app hasn’t been updated to the most reason version, any bugs Facebook have detected will not yet be fixed, which may cause problems with login or general use of the app.

It could also be a problem with your phone or tablet. Your device getting too hot or battery and memory problems could cause apps to close down involuntarily.

How to stop Facebook crashing

Try the following solutions if this keeps happening to you:

Make some space

If these crashes are down to lack of memory, delete as many photos, songs, or things you don’t need as possible.

Hopefully, you’ll see an improvement.

Update your software/app

As mentioned before, you need to be running the newest version of the app to ensure it isn’t susceptible to bugs.

Go to the app store on your device and update Facebook if this option is available.

Also, go to settings > general > software update to ensure you have the latest version of iOS, as this can also lead to issues.

Delete the app and reinstall

If the problem is persistent, this is the next step.

Press and hold the Facebook app on your touch-screen until it starts to move back and forth. Click the cross that appears on the top-right of the app logo, and follow the instructions to delete.

Then, go onto the app store, search Facebook, and reinstall.

Reset settings

This won’t delete any of your apps or information, but will reset the settings of these apps to the factory default.

Go to settings > general > reset > reset all settings to do this. You will need to enter your passcode, too.

Restore your phone or iPad

After doing all this, any further problems show that there’s probably an issue with your phone or tablet’s software.

This is an extreme step, but a last resort in fixing issues with apps like Facebook. Be aware, all your information and apps will be deleted from your device when you restore it.

The first thing you need to do is back up using iCloud or iTunes. You can find instructions on how to do this here.

Once you’ve backed everything up (and triple-checked everything is saved elsewhere), connect your device to a computer with your charger cable and bring up iTunes.

Select your device, click summary, and click restore. Follow the instructions to complete this.

If you do all of this and still can’t get the app to stop closing itself down, you should visit the Apple store or a trusted repair shop to take a look.

It might be pricey, but once a restore has taken place and your apps are still breaking down, you need to call in the professionals.
