This article is more than 6 years old.

Yesterday, Asus announced an affordable, unlocked ZenFone – the Max M1 – that packs in a high-capacity battery and integrated bio-security features like face recognition and a fingerprint sensor.

Today, Asus launched an Apple iPhone X.

Well, technically, the Asus ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z that were just unveiled at MWC are Android-based smartphones, but they borrow heavily from the iPhone X’s design, to put things mildly. The ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z look like larger variants of the iPhone X and even include the much maligned notch at the top, but these devices are far from cheap knockoffs. In fact, Android lovers that have iPhone X envy may find these devices incredibly appealing.

“We embarked on the ZenFone project four years ago with the idea to create empowering luxury for everyone to enjoy,” said Asus CEO Jerry Shen. “Today, the ZenFone 5 Series is the most intelligent ZenFone series ever, utilizing advanced AI algorithms and big-data analytics to provide users with a unique slate of intelligent camera, communication and convenience features.”

The ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z have the same industrial design, but are based on different internal hardware. Front and center is a 6.2-inch display with a resolution of 2246x1080, complete with the aforementioned notch. 32GB and 64GB models will be offered, with either 4 or 6GB of RAM.

Other features of the Asus ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5z include an 8MP front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture, a primary rear-facing 12MP camera with a Sony IMX363 sensor, f/1.8 aperture, and an 83° field of view, and a secondary wide-angle camera with a 120° FoV. The phones will also feature 3,300mAh batteries and USB Type-C charge and sync ports.

Where the two models differ is in regard to their processors. The ZenFone 5 is built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, while the higher-end ZenFone 5Z features Qualcomm’s current flagship Snapdragon 845 platform with Adreno 630 graphics, just like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.

Pricing for the entire line-up wasn’t revealed, but Asus has disclosed that the base model ZenFone 5Z with Snapdragon 845 starts at only $499.
