Today is a big day for Fortnite fans and mobile gamers.

Sign-ups for the mobile version of Epic's popular battle royale game begin today, and apparently so many players are trying to sign up for the game on iOS that Epic's website has crashed/been taken down for maintenance.

Don't worry. According to Epic, the website will be back up at 1:30 pm EST. That's 10:30 pm PST for those of you on the West Coast now that Daylight Savings Time is here.

The game is already wildly popular, with over 40 million players across PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac. With Fortnite coming to mobile, the game is only going to get bigger. And the cool thing is, your account isn't locked down to one platform or another. Any progress you make crosses over between platforms.

Better yet, mobile gamers will be able to cross-play alongside PS4, PC and Mac players and/or alongside Xbox One, PC and Mac players. There's still no cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One, largely due to petty, archaic rivalries between Sony and Microsoft. Maybe this game will nudge them into much-needed change.

Still, I can't imagine taking on a PC player from a console, let alone a tablet or smart-phone. Of course, if you don't care too much about winning or being a god-tier player, it's all just good fun.

Fortnite is an awesome game, as millions of players are discovering for themselves. It's a free-to-play shooter where 100 people drop onto a massive island and fight (and build) to become the last player standing.

The mobile version will be identical to the PC/console versions, though obviously control inputs will be different between platforms. I'm excited to see how it plays, as Epic's Unreal Engine is incredibly versatile and Fortnite is a great fit for mobile.

When the website is back up, you can go here to register to play on your iPhone or iPad. An Android version will release at a later date.

Update: Well it's 1:45 EST and the Fortnite website is still down.

Update 2: It's just after 2 pm EST and the iOS sign-up page is back online. Hopefully it stays that way. Now go sign up!
