Fortnite, the ultra-popular battle royale game, earned $1 million in in-app purchases within its first 72 hours of landing in the App Store — and more than $1.5 million in total.

That would be impressive under any circumstances. What makes this even more so is the fact that, at this point, Fortnite is still an “invite only” game that’s not available to everyone who wants to play it!

Fortnite is a smash hit on iOS

For those unfamiliar with it, Fortnite is a cross-platform battle royale game in which you’re thrown into an enormous map against 99 others with just one mission: Be the last one to survive. (For my colleague Killian Bell’s initial enthusiastic impressions, read this: Fortnite on iOS will totally blow your mind.)

App data gathered by Sensor Tower Store Intelligence underlines just how popular the game is. In addition to raking in $1 million in its first 72 hours of in-app purchases being live, the game also topped the iPhone download chart in more than 40 countries. At present, it has passed $1.5 million in earnings worldwide.

Sensor Tower Store Intelligence points out that Fortnite fares well against even the biggest mobile game launches of the last few years — which didn’t have the same invite-only limitations.

By comparison, it grossed around one-third of Pokémon Go‘s $4.9 million and Clash Royale‘s $4.6 million for their first four days of availability on iOS.

That certainly bodes well for how the money-printing abilities of the game once it finally opens up to whoever wants to play it! Our only question is whether this will be a long-standing hit or a flavor of the month more like Pokémon Go.
