Windows 10 Version 1803 Development Winds Down

Windows 10 Version 1803 Development Winds Down

With the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview build 17128 to the Fast ring today, Microsoft is signaling that the end is nigh.

The end of development, that is. Windows 10 version 1803 is now feature-complete. And while this build is not necessarily the final build, it represents what we can expect for this version of Windows 10. Any further builds are simply about fine-tuning and bug fixing.

“We’re … beginning the phase of checking in final code to prepare for the final release,” Microsoft announced today. “The watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop has disappeared. This does not mean this is the final build as we are not done yet … we’ve got more fixes being checked in for the next [build].”

So the only difference between this build and the previous one, as it turns out, is that watermark: And that previous build, build 17127 is not coincidentally heading out to the Slow ring today too. This thing is baked.

See that sign-post in the distance? That’s the finish line.

<p>Paul, I am wondering if this may be the RTM build, and they will fix the bugs that are left using Windows Update? I only say this because after upgrading, the Windows Insider doesn't give an option to no longer receive builds until next public release and stop insider builds afterward. Instead only way to stop it now is to completely leave the insider program and restart.</p>

<blockquote><a href="#255926"><em>In reply to Maverick010:</em></a></blockquote><p>No, that's not the reason. And the build may or may no be final. Windows 10, like any computer software isn't conscious or intelligent. Computers are dumb. The reason you are able to completely leave is because MS switched off the Watermark. Windows 10 uses the pre-release flag to determine whether to let you leave the insider preview. Since removing the watermark means turning off the pre-release flag, Windows 10 thinks you are on a public release.</p><p><br></p><p>To ensure you get all the bug fixes as soon as they arrive, stay on the Fast ring until Microsoft declares it final or if the build goes to Release Preview. If it goes to release preview, it's final.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>

<blockquote><a href="#255988"><em>In reply to NazmusLabs:</em></a> Unless Microsoft has changed something, they have never confirmed RTM versions of the OS in the past. Insiders guessed and usually figured it out once it hits Slow, and Release Ring. Also Microsoft has removed the Watermark in the past and you still had the function to get new builds until the release was made public, but being that this isn't on the public ring and when they hit RTM before, the Windows Insider Opt-out was the only way to leave, has me thinking this may at least be an RTM candidate and the few bugs that may still be there can be corrected using Windows Update. We will need to wait and see.</blockquote><p><br></p>
