Edge Makes its Way to iPad and Android Tablets

Microsoft Edge Beta is Available on iPad

This shouldn’t be too surprising but Microsoft is ready to complete the mobile roll-out of Edge. Announced today, with an update to their original blog post, is that Edge can now be downloaded on the iPad and Android tablets.

This version of Edge is just like the one for smaller-screen devices and has support for favorites (including Roaming Favorites), Reading List, New Tab Page, Reading View, and Roaming Passwords. The company will continue to bring additional features to these apps but nothing has been announced at this time.

While it may seem odd that Microsoft is bringing an iteration of its browser to mobile devices, it’s a necessary requirement to remain competitive in the browser landscape. Further, this version of Edge is not based on Microsoft’s own rendering engine but instead uses webkit.

If you want to download the app today, head to the store on your device and you should be able to find it via search. If that doesn’t work, you can go to Microsoft’s page and they can email you a link as well.

This may seem like a ridiculous question but does that also mean that you can run Edge on a Chromebook that supports Android apps?

No thanks.

If MS actually wanted Edge to have a fighting chance it would've been available on Windows 7 and 8.1 from day one, just like Chrome and Firefox.

And just like Cortana, it is only available in a handful of countries.

I've been using Edge for about six days now on my Android tablet and so far so good.

Edge on IPad is actually really nice – there a few niggles like the position of the refresh button is different to the desktop, and some web plugins don’t work when they do work on Safari. Otherwise its a good job.

Strangely, unlike on my PC, I actually like Edge on my Android phone. This may just be unique to what's going on with my phone, but it seems more responsive, less laggy than Chrome. I have no idea why and it may not actually be any more responsive, but it just feels more responsive — again, unlike on my PC.

Been using Edge pretty much everywhere and loving it, but there are two things that I'm missing: Ad blocking (give me Ublock Origin!) on the Android client and easy multi-sign-in on both Desktop and Android. I have to manage 3 different Microsoft accounts for myself and for two organizations for which I was appointed Secretary, and it is darn near impossible to use Edge for those tasks as far as I can tell.

In reply to Daekar:

I am an Edge on Android user (like most mobile browsers it does not support extensions). I use AdGuard. The free version works with any browser. The app must be sideloaded initially, but it is reputable and of a very high quality. I learned of it after trying the extension for Edge on Windows 10. You don't need to root your device either.

In reply to FalseAgent:

Samsung's own Android browser supports extensions. I am using a lot Edge on my S8 lately, but I miss the Ad block I have on the Samsung's browser.

I wonder if Edge on MacOS will be considered…

useless…why would I bother using Edge anyway? Chrome and Safari are way better on Ipad and also sync everything I need.

MS could at least ensure that Edge is comparable in web standards support, but unfortunately it remains a laggard – caniuse.com
