A couple of weeks ago Dell unveiled a bevy of laptops, all-in-ones, and Alienware gaming machines. The timing was all to do with the availability of Intel’s latest 8th Gen Core processors. Then, a couple of days ago, without fanfare, the PC systems making goliath added two AMD Ryzen Mobile powered laptop variants to its roster. It is good to have a choice of main processor in these Dell mainstream machines, so it is worth taking a look at these AMD options.

New Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1

If you head on over to the official Dell web shop you will see that the titular convertible is listed at prices from $729.99 (the entry level Intel version costs $849). There are actually a trio of pre-configured Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1s with AMD processors available. At the cheap end you have a Ryzen 5 2500U Mobile processor, 8GB of DDR4 and 256GB SSD built into the 13.3-inch FHD IPS touch screen based system. At the top end ($1018.99) you get a Ryzen 7 2700U Mobile processor, 12GB DDR4, and 256GB SSD. All the systems can be upgraded to a maximum of 16GB RAM.

These portable and flexible systems offer up plenty of ports and are just 18.7-19.2mm thick and weigh in at 1.75Kg.

New Inspiron 15 5000

Again Dell is selling four configurations of this machine, based around AMD Ryzen mobile chips – alongside the Intel versions available in its web store. The machines vary according to processor; AMD Ryzen 3 2200U Mobile, Ryzen 5 2500U Mobile, Ryzen 7 2700U Mobile RAM between 8GB and 16GB DDR4 (support up to 32GB), and whether they have touch screens or not.

All of these 15.6-inch FHD machines come with a 1TB HDD as standard (except for the top end machine with 500GB SSD) and an DVD/CD combi optical drive. Across the range, ports include; 2x USB 3.1 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI 1.4b, 1x Noble lock, 1x SD Media Card Reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC). Other standards are stereo speakers, HD webcam, a full-size, spill-resistant keyboard with 10-key numeric keypad, fingerprint reader, 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.1, 42WHr 3-Cell Battery. Whatever the configuration the Inspiron 15 5000 is 22.7mm thick and weighs 2.2Kg.

As Liliputing says in its article about these quiet introductions, “it’s nice to see more laptops with Ryzen chips, even if Dell isn’t going out of its way to promote the new models”.

No Precision range machines? Oh well.
Drivers are still woeful for these. Latest ones are Feb 12. Hopefully with a Dell launch AMD might get their backsides into gear
Only in the US! The UK site still has no Ryzen Mobile options!
