Company confirms issue on a number of Intel SSDs

Upgrading a Windows 10 device to April 2018 Update manually is a risky thing to do, as you can easily tell by simply looking at the increasing number of bugs reported since Microsoft rollout the new OS version.

More recently, the company itself acknowledged a bug hitting computers with Intel SSDs which after upgrading to the April 2018 Update could hit errors and be unable to boot.

Microsoft says in an advisory that it moved to block the upgrade on these systems until a fix is delivered. Users who somehow managed to install the April 2018 Update on their devices and now are experiencing crashes or other problems that might be caused by the Intel SSD compatibility issue are recommended to return to their previous Windows 10 version.

“When attempting to upgrade to Window 10 April 2018 Update select devices with certain Intel SSDs may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly,” Microsoft says.

“Microsoft is currently blocking some Intel SSDs from installing the April 2018 Update due to a known incompatibility that may cause performance and stability issues.  There is no workaround for this issue. If you have encountered this issue, you can roll back to Windows 10, version 1709 and wait for the resolution before attempting to install the April 2018 Update again.”

Bugfixes expected today

The company explains that a patch is already in the works and once it becomes available, these devices would be allowed to download the April 2018 Update once again.

There’s no ETA for this patch, however. Microsoft will release new Windows 10 cumulative updates later today as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, and large patch with fixes for the April 2018 Update is also expected, especially given the big number of issues reported lately.

It’s not clear if this Intel SSD problem will be addressed as well, but we’ll keep an eye out on reports and let you know if a fix becomes available.
