EA: Sony PlayStation 4 Cumulative Sales 2.5 Times Greater Than Xbox One

Now, thanks to statements made by Electronic Arts official during the company's investor conference call, we're getting a better idea of just how badly the PlayStation 4 is clobbering the Xbox One. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen made the following statement: "We expect sales of current-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony to continue to be strong, with the installed base growing to 130 million consoles by the end of calendar 2018 from 103 million at the end of calendar 2017."

Now if we step, back, Sony announced back in early January that it had sold a total of 73.6 million PlayStation 4 console through Q4 2017. With some simple math, that puts Xbox One lifetime sales [through Q4 2017] at 29.4 million. In other words, the PlayStation 4 has roughly a 2.5x sales advantage over its rival.

Microsoft has been well aware of its also-ran status in the current generation console race for years. Back in October 2015, Xbox chief Phil Spencer gave a sobering responsewhen asked about the PlayStation 4's [then] early sales lead.

“You know, I don't know. You know, the length of the generation. They [Sony] have a huge lead and they have a good product," said Spencer. “[We] fundamentally lost... the trust of our most loyal customers. We lost the trust in them that they were at the center of our decision-making process. Were we building a product for us, or were we building a product for the gamers?"

Not even the Xbox One X, which is by far the most powerful gaming console released for consumers, has been enough to turn the tide in Microsoft's favor. That console has an MSRP of $499, but can regularly be found much cheaper on sale.
