iOS 12 Beta Delayed? Apple Sneaks iOS 11.4.1 Beta Out To Testers

Well, this is a surprise.

After finally putting the lid on iOS 11.4 earlier this week, everyone assumed Apple was all done with iOS 11 beta tests. WWDC is next Monday, after all, and the expectation is that Tim Cook will be unveiling iOS 12, with a beta test coming soon after.

The one interesting thing about iOS 11.4.1 is that there's no official information for it. Usually, developers are provided release notes for each beta release. This time, they're completely blank. That doesn't mean there isn't anything in this release, it just means there's nothing that Apple can share with people outside the company.

What's In Store for iOS 11.4.1

Most likely, this will be a quick and dirty beta to take care of a few bugs that got fixed just after iOS 11.4 shipped. The especially optimistic are digging into the code to see if there's any evidence of new hardware that this beta was rolled out to support. Either way, as soon as I know anything, I'll let you know.

So what does this mean for the upcoming iOS 12 beta? Will Apple delay it to finish testing iOS 11.4.1? Most likely not. Either this will be an especially quick testing cycle, or Apple will run the two beta test concurrently. If the latter happens, I'll give you the rundown on how to switch to a different beta build.

In the meantime, now's as good of a time as any for a quick refresher on how this whole Public Beta Test program works.

How To Start Beta Testing

Need to get signed up? Head over to https://beta.apple.com/ and sign in with your enrolled Apple ID (or create a beta account if you don't have one already) and follow the steps. They're fairly self-explanatory, but if you get stuck, check out my How To Install Apple Public Betas guide (to be honest, you should check it out anyway for helpful reminders of things to watch out for when beta testing).

If you're ready to get off the beta train, you can do that too. Just delete your beta profile and await the next round.

See you next week with iOS 12 beta news!
