Xbox Scarlett: Five reasons why Sony should be very worried about Microsoft's next console

MICROSOFT's next Xbox console dubbed "Scarlett" was confirmed to be in development at E3 last week and could arrive as soon as 2020, bringing a host of new features to gamers eagerly anticipating the next generation of hardware.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed new "Xbox consoles" were being developed at the Redmond-based company during Microsoft's annual E3 press conference.

He said: "The same team that delivered unprecedented performance with Xbox One X is deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to set the benchmark for console gaming."

The comments from Mr Spencer hint at multiple version of the next console.

Then during Bethesda's press conference shortly after, Todd Howard, the Director of the studio, revealed two new games he dubbed as "next generation" titles in the Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield.

That means both will surely make their way to the next generation Xbox.

With the next generation of Microsoft hardware on the horizon, here are five reasons PlayStation fans should be worried.

The next Xbox will be about gamers first and foremost

Unlike the muddled reveal of the Xbox One back in 2013, Scarlett will surely refine Microsoft's strategy of targeting gamers.

This means the company will focus on software as the primary selling point of the hardware rather than explaining other entertainment functionality in an attempt to appeal to mass audiences.

The unveiling of the Xbox One X showed that Phil Spencer has firmly steered the course of Microsoft's gaming division following a period of mixed messaging under prior leadership.

As the announcement of Scarlett at E3 suggested, Microsoft is using the message Sony delivered so elegantly with the PlayStation 4 reveal in 2013 by firmly targeting gamers and relying on them to spread the word to achieve laudable hardware sales.

Scarlett looks set to beat the PlayStation 5 to market
With industry experts predicting the next Xbox will arrive as early as 2020, and after the head of Sony's PlayStation division, John Kodera, admitting last month the next Playstation is still at least three years away, the next Xbox looks set to begin the next generation.
Microsoft coming out of the gates first could provide it with an incredible amount of momentum if, for an entire year, all titles look and perform better on the next Xbox.
This, combined with the fact the Xbox One X already packs a ton more power than the PlayStation 4 Pro could be incredibly damaging to Sony.
The next Xbox will be a graphical behemoth
During the announcement of the next Xbox Phil Spencer confirmed Microsoft was working to once again "set the benchmark for console gaming".
Such aggressive language from the Xbox boss surely means the Redmond-based company is looking to beat Sony on graphical horsepower, just like it did with Xbox One X.
If the console harnesses the latest graphical hardware it means games will surely run at a buttery smooth 60 frames-per-second at a full 4K resolution.

Backwards compatibility returns and could force Sony to do the same
An area where Microsoft has completely dominated the console space is in the area of backwards compatibility.
The company added the feature to the Xbox One in 2015 and has made it easier than ever for users to access a huge back catalogue of last generation titles through its subscription service dubbed Xbox Game Pass.
Sony meanwhile has struggled to gain traction with its PlayStation Now subscription service and will surely be forced to ensure its next hardware is able to handle all previous PlayStation 4 titles.
Microsoft is serious about delivering top-tier exclusives
Microsoft launched an all-out assault on Sony's plethora of top-tier exclusives by announcing it had acquired four new studios and had formed a fifth.
All five will be developing titles exclusively for Xbox and will surely take the fight to PlayStation that dominated the current generation with industry-leading software like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn.
