New Apple AI Unit To Be Led By Ex-Google Boss

This article is more than 5 years old.

Apple has set up a new artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) unit and picked former Google executive John Giannandrea to lead it, according to multiple reports.

The new AI group, confirmed by an Apple spokesperson, will see Apple's Siri and Core ML teams unified under one leader, Giannandrea.

Apple's Siri and machine learning teams have operated relatively independently of one another over the last few years, yet they share many of the same goals and their work often overlaps.

Today, tech companies like Apple, Google, and Amazon consider AI to be a vital technology that should be applied across the business and to multiple products.

As such, it could be argued that it makes sense to unify multiple AI research initiatives under one experienced executive.

Giannandrea joined Apple in April after eight years at Google where he led Machine Intelligence, Research, and Search teams. Prior to Google, he founded Metaweb Technologies (acquired by Google in 2010) and Tellme. He studied at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Computer Science.

Giannandrea is one of 16 executives who report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook, according to VentureBeat
