Apple's New iPad Pros To Trade Home Button For Tiny Bezels And Face ID
This will be complete redesign of the iPad Pro family, and Apple is said to have trimmed the bezels all around. Apple has reportedly killed off the home button, just as it did when the iPhone X was introduced in the fall of 2017. In its place will be Face ID, which was also first seen on the iPhone X. Although the iPad can traditionally be used in either a vertical or horizontal orientation, Face ID will reportedly only work when the device is held in portrait mode.
The home button isn't the only thing that's been removed: the 3.5mm headphone jack is also saying goodbye. Apple first removed the 3.5mm jack with the iPhone 7 back in 2016 and the backlash was immense. However, now that the naysayers have backed down for the most part, it's time for the iPad Pro to join the iPhones with Lightning-only connectivity. With that being said, we have the feeling that losing the headphone jack won't be as much of a sticking point with Apple customers as it was for those that harped over its omission on the iPhone 7.
The new iPad Pro family should launch alongside the 2018 iPhone family this fall. It's likely that both the iPhones and iPad Pros will be powered by some variant of the unannounced Apple A12 processor.
