This Is Apple’s New Wireless AirPods Charging Case

Apple is working on major upgrades for its audio products. The firm has been rumoured to be working on two new AirPods, as well as studio-quality over-the-hear headphones. The company today shipped new developer betas for iOS 12, watchOS 5, macOS Mojave, and tvOS 12, and it seems to have leaked one of its upcoming products as part of the new iOS 12 beta.

According to 9to5Mac, iOS 12’s beta 5 includes shots of the new AirPods charging case. The new charging includes supports wireless charging capability, so users can charge their AirPods cases with the upcoming (and delayed) AirPower charger. The wireless charging capabilities are obviously not noticeable in the pictures above, but there’s another new addition: an indicator for the battery level of the case.

The tiny LED indicator displays an amber light when the case’s charge is low, and a green light when it’s fully charged or close to being fully charged. Apart from that, there really isn’t anything new. Here’s a video render showing the new case:

Apple is expected to unveil two different AirPods. One of which is coming later this year, and it will feature a new chip as well as support for hands-free Siri activation, plus the new charging case. The other, much bigger upgrade, will feature noise-cancellation, water resistance, and increased range support, and it’s expected to launch in 2019. The new wireless charging case could be available as a separate product for those who already own the first-gen AirPods, but there’s a big chance Apple will try to sell it with the new AirPods in order to drive sales.

Current case already has that LED. It's just inside, so you have to open the lid to see it. Still wondering if this will be standard Qi, or the pseudo-Qi the Apple Watch uses. I can charge my iPhone X on any Qi charger, in fact I have to since Apple doesn't sell one. The watch requires Apple's charger, or one licensed by Apple. There are some of those, but none are cheap.
