Shocking footage shows the moment a woman’s cell phone explodes on her dashboard in China — forcing the panic-stricken driver to bolt from her car.
The video, obtained by Asia Wire, shows the woman, from Shanghai’s Minhang district, driving along a highway when her iPhone 6 suddenly pops, emitting some flames and smoke.
She cries out in fear and brakes for a moment, but then continues driving to avoid obstructing traffic.
But only about 20 seconds later, the still-smoking device erupted into a ball of fire — leaving the screaming woman no choice but to slam on the brakes and get out of the car, with other drivers circling around her.
When another driver approached to check on her, she wailed, “My phone exploded! My phone exploded!”
The woman’s husband, who would only provide his last name, Jiang, told the outlet that the explosion was completely unprovoked.
“She was driving alone; no one touched the phone,” Jiang said. “It just suddenly blew up. She wasn’t charging or even using it at the time.”
The phone’s battery was changed at a local mobile repair service center, Hoho Fast, back in February, he added.
The center took the phone back and provided a new battery after the explosion, but won’t take “further responsibility” — fixing the phone or compensating for the burnt dashboard, Jiang said.
But the couple continues to fight a losing battle with the store, Jiang said.
“It’s like they’re squeezing us like a tube of toothpaste,” he told the outlet. “They’ll squeeze us until we run out of patience and give up, then the case is closed for them.”
Some Chinese social media users, though, insisted the woman is to blame for the incident.
“It’s extremely hot in the summer and you leave your phone exposed to the sun,” Abren Guanxianshi wrote, according to the report. “It’s obviously going to explode, you idiot! And you’re blaming the phone?”
