Hell is back, and it looks as intense as ever. At Quakecon today, Bethesda revealed the first proper look at Doom Eternal, the sequel to 2016’s excellent reboot of the iconic shooter series, with a series of lengthy videos. Eternal was initially revealed at E3 back in June with a teaser trailer, but this is the first time the developer is showing off gameplay. You can watch the keynote in its entirety above, though the Doom section starts about an hour and 11 minutes into the presentation.

As promised during the original announcement, Eternal introduces hell on Earth, with a new setting that brings the demon hordes off of Mars and down to our home planet; though there are still sci-fi locations like the Martian moon Phobos. The action, meanwhile, looks just as nail-biting and brutal as its predecessor.

The developers at id say that this version of the “doom slayer” — the nameless protagonist — is the most powerful in the series’s history, complete with new weapons and an updated design. There’s also a new “destructible demons” system that lets you cut enemies into little bits, and a system that lets you play as a demon and fight against — or “invade,” as the developers describe it — other players in their own single-player campaign.

The 2016 reboot was a surprise hit of pure action when it launched, especially as the game was saddled with a long and tortuous development. Not only was the original great, but it also expanded to a number of unexpected places, with releases on both the Nintendo Switch and VR headsets.

Doom Eternal is coming to PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, though there’s currently no release date.
