iOS 12 Public Beta 6 Delayed After Apple Pulls It For Performance Issues

This article is more than 5 years old.

Into every beta, a little rain must fall and Apple's iOS 12 is no different.

After waiting hopefully yesterday for a special birthday surprise, I was disappointed to see that Apple didn't fix the performance issue with the iOS 12 Developer Beta 7. It was released briefly on Monday, as per schedule. Soon after, those that updated their devices using the OTA build (which is what we in the Public Beta use) complained of lagging performance whenever they tried to open apps. The sluggishness seemed to clear up after opening an app for the first time, so maybe there's some sort of re-indexing happening in the background?

Whatever the reason, the fact that it's happening in one type of iOS 12 beta upgrade file and not the other is a big, big red flag. Apple shut down the over the air update within a couple of hours. I had hoped they'd revise the OTA file and re-release it on Tuesday.

That obviously didn't happen.

At the same time, this is a blessing in disguise for all of you that have been enjoying Group FaceTime. The feature has been buggy since its introduction and Apple has decided to pull it for a future iOS 12 release rather than keep dedicating resources to fixing it. It's been removed from Public Beta 6 and we won't see it again until iOS 12.1. So you get to hold on to it just a little bit longer.

Will we get a Public Beta 6 this week? I'm not certain. Apple likes to leave a week between beta releases at this stage, so they could just cut bait and next week's Developer Beta 8 will be our Public Beta 6. Or they could surprise me and we'll see something later today.

If you don't have Automatic Updates turned on, check around 2 PM ET and again when you get up in the morning (Apple likes to sneak out overnight updates when they don't hit the 2 PM release). If this update goes live, I'll be ready with release note analysis. If not, I'll see everyone next week.
