Apple takes a firm stance on iPhone privacy, with strict rules. Nevertheless, many people remain nervous that their phone is spying on them.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel, on his eponymous TV show, pokes fun at this fear in a newly-released video. Watch it now:
Incidentally, Kimmel remarks in his video that “Apple released a statement saying ‘We are not eavesdropping on our customers.’ That’s the kind of thing that makes me nervous. So your neighbor knocks on the bathroom window and says ‘I haven’t been watching you shower.’ ”
While funny, this isn’t what happened. The U.S. Congress asked Apple to describe its privacy policies. The company responded in depth, but a summary might be “We are not eavesdropping on our customers.” Or watching them shower.
The panoptispy phobia
The fear that our phones are constantly spying on us isn’t rare. But a recent in-depth study by researchers from Northeastern University found no evidence that Android devices are constantly listening to users, or secretly making videos. And that’s with Android, an operating system known for all kinds of privacy violations.
Apple, by contrast, bends over backwards to protect user privacy. As the company will state whenever it’s given the chance, “We believe privacy is a fundamental human right.”
