Microsoft’s Remix3D has Been Flagged as an Advertisement, Blocked by Plug-ins

Back in April of 2017, when Microsoft released the Creators update for Windows 10, they made a huge deal about the new 3D features that shipped with that release. As part of that update, the company launched Remix3d.com, a website that allows you to share content that you created using 3D Paint.

Since at least Thursday evening, the website has been broken and does not allow you to share, login, or download content. The site simply says “Something went wrong. Try again later”.

Websites break, this is a common thing on the Internet. If the site went down for a couple hours and was fixed, this wouldn’t be worth reporting but this site has been down for days with no signs of any updates or attempts to fix the service.

My guess here is that the website is rarely used and that no one at Microsoft noticed the site is broken. This also shows that they aren’t monitoring any metrics to monitor the health of the site as 0 download and 0 uploads would surely be a flag that would cause someone, anyone, to take a look at the site.

Microsoft made a huge deal about 3D Paint and all the 3D assets that shipped with the Creators update and the company likely hoped that Remix3D would be a future cornerstone of their 3D world as they try to build out the ecosystem for its Mixed Reality platform.

But, with the site not being actively monitored, it’s likely safe to say that the Remix3D has come up short on success.

[Update] It looks like the site may have been added to a universal block, meaning it has been marked as an advertisement. If you use built-in ad blocker with Opera, the site does not work. If you disable it, appears to be working again.

it could have been the case no one noticed, but turned out that it was falsely flagged as spammy ad site by ad blockers so Brad updated the article, all good.

We should report about a much bigger issue though, Skype broken in essential functionality and no one at MS seems to notice.

I mean sure, Brad and Paul and many other users of Skype report about how MS makes Skype worse and worse.

But meanwhile it has reached a new height in crazy badness.

On mac they pushed the 8 something update out and it is broken on a whole new level there: When someone chats to me, it shows a red message icon indicating that there was a message, but it does not show by which contact.

Neither do i see the new message was by that contact when i actually scroll to the list part where that contact is.

Like come on, wtf! Seriously guys, how can one screw up such a bsic essential functionality of a messaging app and not fix that the same day?

It is broken for several days meanwhile.

I wish they'd just roll back all nonsense they did in the last year or two regarding Skype and would just bring back the old clients which at least worked much better in all such essential functionality.

"Microsoft’s Remix3D has Been Flagged as an Advertisement, Blocked by Plug-in Used by Fraction of Users of Web Browser That Accounts for 3.35% of Total Market Share" [FIXED]

Seriously, though, this is still a worthwhile article for a few reasons.

First, it does showcase how certain features introduced in recent releases of Windows have struggled to find practical applications. You could just as easily see something like this happening for Game Broadcasting, People Bar, Timeline, the Remix feature of Photos, or a number of other tools that were supposed to revolutionize the way we share our creations. Point well taken there.

Second, it shows how confirmation bias works. We all want to believe this narrative that Windows is the nexus of intersecting domains that include bloated features nobody uses, complexity that's hard to understand, and lack of polish due to apathy from its creators. When you see a crack in the façade, it's really easy to jump on it as evidence that you've been right all along (frankly, Paul's a bit heavy-handed about this as well). It's humbling to discover that we all have a bit of bias around our own point-of-view. So, it's a learning opportunity.

Finally, it's an interesting study in how modern publishing works. When you realized what was actually happening, you could have just taken down the article. But that's not how a credible tech news site works. Instead, I think you did the right thing by updating the title (though maybe a little more "oops" is warranted here <img class="emoji" draggable="false" alt="?" src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/11/svg/1f609.svg"&gt😉 and content to better explain the story.

Because like I said up top, it's still a worthwhile discussion to have. It also shows how problematic plug-ins can be, and how ultimately, anything like an ad-blocker really comes down to making certain assumptions about the meaning of content, and they don't always get it right. Neither do we.

Keep up the good work, sir. </p>

It is not blocked by AdBlock Plus for me in Chrome. Must be a specific blocklist that flagged it, I just use the default "EasyList".

I've checked debug tools and it looks like the JavaScript code in the site is written in a way that it crashes when one of the tracking scripts is not present (which is, for me, being blocked by uBlockO). So, the remix3d is not itself blocked, but is coded in a way to have a hard dependency on one of the tracking scripts.

It's probably a matter of an "if" statement being added around the tracking code or something similar.
