This ultra-wide monitor could be the perfect companion for your MacBook

Samsung’s latest QLED monitor is a bit of a beast. It’s 34-inches big, it has an ultra-wide resolution of 3440 x 1440, and it’s got a pretty decent curve on it. Most importantly however, it’s equipped with a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports, which means that it’s able to charge your USB-C MacBook while also connecting it to all its peripherals.

If its visual performance holds up then the CJ79 could end up being the perfect companion for your MacBook. Rather than messing around with handfuls of dongles, you could instead leave your keyboard and mouse plugged into your monitor and hook up your machine with just a single Thunderbolt 3 cable.

These ports offer 85 watts of power to charge your MacBook, which is roughly the same as what their official Apple-supplied chargers provide.

The monitor’s picture-in-picture functionality also sounds potentially very useful. This will let you have the monitor display a feed from two sources simultaneously — so if you’ve got your MacBook plugged in via Thunderbolt then you could also play a PS4 game in a smaller window over an HDMI connection.

There’s a VA panel inside the CJ79 with a refresh rate of 100Hz, and it’s also FreeSync enabled which will be a massive benefit to AMD graphics card owners. Sadly there’s no sign of Nvidia’s competing G-sync technology, and Samsung makes no mention of HDR in its press release.

There’s no word of an official price just yet, but the CJ79 is expected to launch alongside its bigger brother CJ89 “soon” in Europe at a price that’s yet to be announced. Given the headline-grabbing specs of this thing, we wouldn’t expect it to come cheap.
