AMD Slashes Threadripper Prices, Get a 12-Core for $466

If you're looking to build a powerful PC desktop, AMD is offering a bargain on the company's first-generation Threadripper chips, slashing some prices by $200 or more.

The best bargain is for the Threadripper 1920X, a 12-core, 24-thread processor, which is now selling on Amazon for $466.98, a huge drop from the original $800 price.

AMD is also cutting prices for the Threadripper 1950X, a 16-core, 32-thread chip. You can now find it for $718 on Amazon; its original price was $999.

German website 3DCenter spotted the discounts and published a pricing chart. The bargains come as AMD is rolling out second-generation Threadripper chips.

The first-generation Threadripper chips can offer an alternative to Intel's Core i9 series, which is also marketed to PC enthusiasts but is pricier. For instance, the Core i9-7900X retails for $918, but it doesn't necessarily perform better than the Threadripper 1950X, according to PCMag's own tests.

PC enthusiasts in the market for something a little cheaper can look to Threadripper 1900X, an 8-core, 16-thread processor. AMD had been pricing the chip at $429, but slashed the price even further to $316.

However, to use the Threadripper chips, you'll have to buy a compatible X399 motherboard, which range from $300 to $500. You may also need to invest in some PC cooling components if you like to overclock your CPU.

Nevertheless, the discounts for the Threadripper chips appear to have been so good that Newegg has sold out the 1920X chip offering, so buy now while you can.
