Just like with smartphones, usually every new generation of smartwatch brings about improvements to performance and features, which means that every model should be more tempting to upgrade to than before, right? Oddly enough that doesn’t seem to be true as far as the Apple Watch is concerned.

A recent report from Counterpoint Research (via 9to5Mac) has revealed that as far as Apple Watch owners are concerned, 90% of those who buy an Apple Watch are choosing the much older Series 1 over the latest Series 3 (note that Series 0 is the original model, not the Series 1). Apparently for those who did not really care or need cellular connectivity on their smartwatch, these customers chose the Series 1.

Only those that required a connection on their Apple Watch chose the Series 3, which was the first Apple Watch to offer up LTE connectivity. It is unclear why the Series 1 is so popular, perhaps the fact that it is cheaper is one of the reasons. That being said, Apple is expected to announce the Series 4 at its iPhone event next week.

A recent leak has revealed that the Series 4 will sport a larger display. Perhaps the larger display could make it a more compelling reason for users to start upgrading, but we’ll have to wait and see.
