Only a small number of users received the notification

A number of Windows 10 users running production builds of the operating systems were prompted to install a preview build of the upcoming Redstone 5 update, despite these computers not enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

A notification that showed up in the lower right corner of the screen and marked as Suggested told users that there’s a “New Preview Build Available,” inviting them to download Windows Insider Preview Build 17751. There two options offered, update and details.

By the looks of things, installing this build without being part of the Insider program wasn’t possible, so even if users clicked the update button, they still had to go through a series of additional steps to register for downloading preview builds.

According to Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft on the Windows Insider Program Team, this wasn’t a common problem and only a small number of computers actually received the notification.

Microsoft eventually decided to turn off notifications completely during its own investigation, so no computers in the production ring should see such prompts right now.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Windows 10 Redstone 5, which will launch as the October 2018 Update, is currently in the final development stages, and Microsoft plans to sign-off the RTM build as soon as this month.

If everything goes according to the plan, insiders will get the final build at some point in late September, while the public rollout should kick off next month.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update would be released to users across the world in stages, and if everything goes according to the plan, it should become broadly available in just a couple of months, possibly by the end of the year. All systems currently running Windows 10 will be allowed to update to this new release.
