Apple Watch Series 4 May Boast Dazzling High-Resolution Display

This article is more than 5 years old.

It’s just days before the launch of the new Apple Watch Series 4, it looks like.

When Apple’s “Gather Round” event  begins at 10AM Pacific on Wednesday September, there will be a lot of products launched.

There may be three iPhones with  radically different designs and an all-screen iPad Pro with Face ID. Not to mention the long-awaited AirPower charging pad and the fourth-generation Apple Watch. There may be a new MacBook of some kind, likely an entry-level model.

Now, a report from 9to5Mac suggests that the new Watch, likely called Apple Watch Series 4, will be more striking than ever. I’ve checked out the image already and you can read my thoughts here, but now there’s word on the likely screen resolution for the new Watch.

According to 9to5Mac’s estimable Guilherme Rambo, the larger of the two models will have a significantly enhanced resolution, capable of displaying much more data.

Now, all this computation is based on the assumption that the next watch will have the same case sizes as now, 42mm and 38mm, but all leaks and reports have pointed in the same direction, that the new Watches will squeeze a bigger screen into the same-sized Watches as now, meaning that current bands and straps will still be compatible, thankfully.

Anyway, Rambo suggests that looking at information in the current beta for watchOS 5, that the resolution for the 42mm Watch will increase from the current 312 x 390 pixels (that’s width x height) to 384 x 480.

That doesn’t indicate the increase in PPI that those numbers suggest, though, because the display size will be bigger, thanks to the predicted smaller bezels around the display.

If you turn your Apple Watch to Torch mode, where the entire screen lights up in a white light, you can see clearly exactly how much bezel there is around the display. That’s gonna get smaller, it seems.

9to5Mac gussied up an example or two of what the new screen might look like, such as the one above. Essentially just more of the same but bigger - which is a pretty good start.

But my guess is that many of the Watch faces, app menus and even apps themselves will be optimised for the new display, rather than simply enlarged. Which will be better still.

As we count down to the day of the launch, the leaks may have stopped, but the anticipation is certainly building.
