When you think of music streaming services, which platform do you think of? If you answered either Apple Music or Spotify, you’re not alone and it shouldn’t be surprising either because according to a report from Billboard, Apple Music and Spotify currently make up for about 80% of the music streaming market in the US.

Now obviously these two aren’t the only services around as Billboard’s article also references other services such as Amazon Music Unlimited, Google/YouTube Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Tidal, and Deezer, although the latter two are said to still be “very small” in terms of how much they make up the US market.

Also what’s interesting is how many people are paying for the services. Billboard’s report claims that in the US, there are 51 million people paying for music streaming which is almost double that of how many people were subscribed in 2016. They also claim that 65% of recorded music revenue in the US come from streaming services, so safe to say that it looks like streaming is definitely here to stay.

Also what else is interesting is that it seems that not many people seem to care about curated/personalized playlists. This is despite how companies such as Apple have touted its human-curated playlists as one of the features of Apple Music.
