Okay, so the new iPhones are more waterproof than ever, but if you don’t fancy taking your Apple handset for a dip, the next best thing is a new game that landed in the App Store today.

Called True Surf, it’s a surf sim which claims to be the most authentic surfing experience you’ll find on a mobile device. Check out the trailer below.

Surf’s up… on iOS

True Surf is the work of True Axis, a developer that has previously created the likes of True Skate and Jet Car Stunts for iOS and Android. For this latest title, they have teamed up with Surfline and the World Surf League to produce a game that is sure to please fans of the sport.

While the graphics are only so-so, what makes True Surf stand out is its focus on realistic touch-based physics, making it feel like you’re right there stalling and pumping through the pocket.

There are also a range of worldwide locations, which let you surf 21 of the world’s greatest surf breaks from Hawaii to Australia. The kind of breaks vary greatly depending on location, so fans of classic reef breaks might want to stick to Cloudbreak, Fiji, while big wave hunters will want to go for a place like Nazare, Portugal. A particularly neat part of all this is the fact that the game offers real live Surfline weather forecasts, meaning that the experience will vary depending on when you play.

As expected, there’s a cast of multiple surfers and a variety of boards, too, adding up to an experience that should please both casuals and hardcore surf fans.

The game is available as a free download, although there’s a $2.99 monthly subscription if you want to access all the game’s features.

While I haven’t had a deep dive into True Surf (I’m trying to work out if that’s a pun or not), I’ve certainly enjoyed my experience with it so far. If you’re on the lookout for a fun, pick-up-and-play title with a whole lot to keep you coming back, I’d certainly recommend it.

True Surf is available to download from the App Store, compatible with all iOS devices running iOS 10 and above.
