Windows 10 October 2018 Update Users Start Reporting Early Issues

On October 2, Microsoft publicly launched the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The update is now available for manual download, with an official rollout expected to start on Tuesday. The rollout is expected to happen in stages, though those who already downloaded the update are running into some early issues.

Users throughout the interwebs started reporting issues with the update after installing the upgrade. Some are reporting that their files are being deleted after the update is installed — more specifically, the update is reportedly removing files in the Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders.

“I have just updated my Windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me,” a user reported on Microsoft Answers. Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue, and some users are reporting that reverting back to an older version of Windows 10 doesn’t recover the deleted files. Yikes.

Other users are reporting issues with Microsoft’s Edge browser. We have received multiple emails from users reporting Edge’s issues. The browser seems to be completely unusable after the update is installed, with multiple users reporting the same issue.

While most users are reporting an issue where Edge is unable to connect to sites, we have received multiple reports where Edge deleted bookmarked websites after the update was installed. Once again, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge both the issues here, but some users are reporting that enabling IPv6 could help fix the connectivity issues.

It’s not unusual for Windows 10 updates to have early issues initially. Microsoft has run into similar issues in the past, which is why the company rolls out major feature updates in phases. Still, the October 2018 Update is notably one of the more unstable Windows 10 updates in a long time, and I have a good feeling we will see more early issues as the update rolls out more users.

I updated last night and I've not had a single problem.

I'm also giving Edge another try to see if it is able to compete with Chrome, so far so good.

Not seeing an of these issues here. I've updated 3 machines and not lost any data so far as I can see.

Also Edge seems to be working fine, although I've only done a quick test, I use Firefox as my main browser.

Yep, I won't be getting it on my Ivy Bridge-E Xeon workstation because the August & September Intel Microcode update prevents the machine from booting. I had to remove the update via command line and then block it from installation so I could continue to use my workstation. The blame is partially Intel and Partially Microsoft for not doing actual CPU detection when applying the update. the September update was specifically for Broadwell and Skylake CPUs but, screw it, push it out to everyone!

I'm not seeing any problems on the 3 machines I have upgraded. Plus the lag I used to get when right clicking the address bar in Edge seems to be gone and is over all much smoother now. I'm giving it another go as a result.

I've installed this on huge array of hardware (11 devices so far) and it's been smooth as silk every time. Many Dell form factors of desktop PCs, a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet from the "Windows 8" days, a Surface Pro 4, Surface Book 2, HP Stream laptop, a Lenovo Yoga, and several others. So far every one has been fine. I haven't see any files lost, although I of course have a backup of all my files since they're mirrored on every PC (OneDrive) and on an offline external drive, and an online external drive (File History). If your files are only one one drive, you're basically guaranteed to lose them – every hard drive will fail (average lifespan is about 4 years according to companies like Western Digital and Seagate).

I've been using it through the entire Windows Insider program (installing every build) and it never deleted any data. But it does continue to have some issues. For example when coming out of sleep when attached to a Thunderbolt dock with multiple monitors it often doesn't turn one of the monitors on and you have to undock / redock to get it back. Another example is Edge has an issue with WebEx that wasn't there in RS4. There are a lot more minor ones. You file the issues, but never hear back.

I got a TB and Intel sound and video driver updates for my Lenovo over the last couple of weeks.
I love all the comments "I upgraded and no issues here." Well of course you aren't having issues. If every customer had issues after installing 1809, it wouldn't have been released a couple days ago.

That doesn't diminish the fact that a potentially too large percentage of users are having issues. This is something we should all follow closely and hopefully Microsoft addresses quickly.

As to the person in the article that lost 23 years worth of files, I sure hope they had backups. If not, they just learned an extremely painful lesson.

In reply to Skolvikings:

They would have to. 23 years ago would have been Windows 98. There's no way the same PC has been upgrading all along to Windows 10. Even if they're using a NAS, the largest devices from 23 years ago was what, 60GB?

It's funny. I do a clean install of every feature update. It's almost like getting a new PC every 6 months. It's definitely a pain, but it helps me declutter my software and it forces me to do full backups at least twice a year. I just did a full backup on Tuesday to prepare for a clean install of 1809 last night. The clean install worked great. :)

There are always going to be some issues with specific configurations. I have no sympathy for the individual that lost all his files. 220GB of files and you don't have a backup? Obviously the update didn't go well for him, but you have to make sure your files are backed up before a major update like this. Assume your files won't be kept, even if that is the option you select for the update. I did a full refresh of my machine over the summer, I made sure all my files and other settings were backed up so I could restore them later. With all that said, I will be waiting for the update to be pushed to my machine before doing the update.

Microsoft decided to take the risk that automatic updates might harm their customers but decided to go ahead with it anyway.

Hmmm. I can see how data could get lost – I'm set to sync to One Drive including my desktop. But I have an older program that writes to a local "Documents" folder, no matter what. Every time I'd do a fast ring upgrade, that local documents folder is erased. When I next run the local program it recreates that local folder with default contents. At which point I just restore the contents from a copy I keep on my desktop. Never tried to figure out why or report it – just assumed it's an old piece of software doing something stupid and lived with the work-around. But thinking about it, I could imagine cases where this could cause lost data…

It would say the feature is not available for the selected disk. But with the last several versions (they upgrade very frequently), if it detects an SSD, it switches from defrag to trim for that drive. It seems to be the same thing as defragging.

          • Jeff Jones

            06 October, 2018 - 2:20 pm

In reply to CompUser:

In case anyone is confused about this, trimming is not the same as defragging.

Fragmentation occurs for example when File1 is written, then File2 is written right after it. Then if you update File1 to be larger, the file system writes the extra data in the next available space after File2. So you end up with fragments of File1 stored before and after File2.

Defragging puts those split fragments back together so when the rotating hard drive spins around the file can be read in a single line. On the other hand an SSD doesn't need to worry about fragmentation because it can access all locations at the same speed no matter where they are on the drive.

Regarding TRIM, when a file is deleted from a drive it is often just flagged as not used, but the bits are left on the drive as they were. With an HDD you can write over top of the old data without problems. An SSD is different in that you can't write to an area that is already filled without erasing it first. It gets more complicated though because the way an SSD is designed you can't erase only the data you want. SSDs have data store in pages which are grouped into blocks. You can write single pages at a time, but you can only delete data in blocks. So to delete a smaller page of data you have to read the entire block in temporary memory, wipe the entire block then save only the pages you wanted to keep back into the clean block. Then you would be free to write new data into whatever empty pages you freed up.

The TRIM command is like a background cleanup crew that goes around and wipes these areas that have been flagged as empty so when new data is written it doesn't have to wait for the section to be erased first.

Bad news here. I updated my main machine (a Studio) yesterday morning, and when I opened Quicken a little later to enter a payment, I got an abnormal screen treating me as a new user. I couldn't open the standard data file, and couldn't even find it. I looked for backup files and finally found the last one on OneDrive, but it couldn't be opened and looks to be the wrong size. I reversed the installation and am back on 1803. But I didn't get back my Quicken installation and the data files that were missing. I still can't open the backup.

A night's sleep did not improve my mood or give me the sense that I might be able to recover from this.

For about six months I have been running developer versions of 1809 on other machines as an Insider, but I don't have Quicken on those machines, so I had no inkling that this might be a problem. Two other non-Insider machines updated smoothly from 1803 to 1809, but I haven't yet explored them to see if anything is missing that I think should still be there.

I had invited an early update on the Studio by recently joining the Insider Program in get into the Release Preview tier. My other 1803 machines (a power base Book 1 and a 15" Book 2) got the update notification without any effort on my part. That's several days before the official rollout program was supposed to start. I don't know why that would happen, unless… "Go home, Jake. It's Microsofttown."

I'm seriously wondering if I should go to the Apple Store this morning and get something that, on present knowledge, would be more reliable for accounting info. I don't at the moment know if I can rely on Microsoft to keep from destroying the same data on other devices. I don't need stuff from a decade or more ago, but I would really like to have at least the last five years back. I can with time and enough coffee build those years from scratch. But I don't want to have to do it more than once.

I'm a professional developer, which means I'm paid to break things. I also don't trust other developers, because I know they're also paid to break things. Therefore, I do a clean install of every feature update because I know that "upgrade" path has been tested more than any other.

A side effect of doing a clean install every 6 months is that I have full backups of all of my data twice a year. There stuff I create in the intervening months gets uploaded to OneDrive. My paranoia about in place upgrades apparently saved me some headaches, as my install of 1809 is working great. Sorry to hear that this is not the experience of everyone who's upgraded. :(

In reply to Eric_Rasmussen:

I am not sure if what you say is correct. I do around 300 upgrades a year of my machines and perhaps 1 or 2 clean installs (depending if we ran into bugs or not). That's true for most of my colleagues since we get pushed updates of our developer branches almost every day. True it's a build to build upgrade and not the 1803 to the latest upgrades. But upgrades are tested a lot :)

In reply to Eric_Rasmussen:

I also did a clean install, and have only found one issue. The Start menu is behaving very inconsistently. If you Pin and app to the Start menu it works fine, but if you then try to move it, or resize it, it bounces all over the menu, and sometimes when you resize you end up with 2 copies of the menu item. If you then unpin one of them, the other one seems to be inactive. I finally managed to get all the apps I wanted pinned, but it was a bit frustrating at times.

Did the 1809 upgrade on one of my devices and the known folder migration from the 1803 install to 1809 went fine without any data loss. This is just my own upgrade experience with 1809. Those having issues, I would wait before upgrading from 1803.

I got 1809 through Windows Update on a Haswell-era Lenovo Thinkcentre M73Z. It did suffer some file deletions and also Edge and Store cannot connect to the internet at this time. Everything else seems to be working but I haven't dug all that deep just yet. I will hold off on upgrading my other devices for now.

It's killing me, because I ran into the same problem, and cannot remember what the solution is, other than I found it on the net. You'll find that your regular Win32 apps work fine, but not any of the store apps. It may be related to IPV6.

I didn't notice any file deletion but I haven't looked.

Both computers had the connectivity problems: Edge, Microsoft Store, and other UWP apps had no internet connectivity, but windows itself and win32 apps had no issues.

After reading the suggestion that enabling IPv6 would fix this, I tried it and it worked on my desktop.

On my SP4, it wouldn't work at home but when I took it to work it worked fine, even though IPv6 was disabled in the WiFi adapter settings. When I went back home it had the connectivity issues again. I enabled IPv6 and the problem was fixed.

So it appears to be related to IPv6 but only on some networks (perhaps only networks that support IPv6 – I haven't checked this)

Interestingly, a number of my clients were getting the 1809 update today which is strange as I thought I read in a previous article here that it was not rolling out until next week?

I manually upgraded my development VM which is running in VMWare workstation on my Linux machine and it seems to have upgraded OK and no documents or pictures missing?

I am wondering if this is going to be an antivirus issue again. I used to use ThreatTrack Vipre but have now switched to Malwarebytes as Vipre definitely caused issues with the 1803 update when it first came out. I had a long session with ThreatTrack support when it first caused Windows 10 to blue screen and was able to track it down to one of the DLLs that was used by Vipre.

Siv

I worked at MSFT for 15 years and literally 2 days before Vista was scheduled to go gold, a pre-sales engineer installed the final build on his desktop machine and it wiped his documents folder. He sent an email to the main Windows development alias asking why it happened and as the story goes, Ballmer personally called him, told him he had a flight to Seattle booked and to bring his desktop on the plane with him. When he got to Redmond, they figured it out, tested it, created a new build and asked everyone to test it over the weekend. If I remember right, it went gold early that next week. I never found out if he got his data back, hope he had a backup!

It's a good thing I started using PCs in the MS-DOS era. I never store anything other than Office ribbon/QAT customizations in Documents and a few personal .ICO files and my current desktop background (with backups elsewhere) in Pictures. I pretty much view %USERPROFILE% as a cesspit with my HKCU registry hive, application-generated cruft under %APPDATA%, and temporary files I can afford to lose. On my home machines, I always split internal HDDs into multiple partitions. On work PCs, I keep almost all work files on servers, and I have my tricks for storing work files locally which don't involve storing anything under %USERPROFILE% or under C:UsersPublic.

Still, anyone not backing up important files onto other media or remote servers is playing a variant of Russian Roulette. IOW, they have my full sympathy for losing anything created in the past few days, but little sympathy for anything years old for which they had them only on their current PC.

So far the only issue I have noticed is that I have lost some file associations. When I clicked on a .docx file it asked me if I want to open it in Word and provided a check box to Always use this program. Also if I right click on a .txt file and try to open it in Word, I am not give that option, only Notepad, WordPad and a couple of others that are of no use.

I sure hope MSFT finds the source of the deleted files bug, and I hope it turns out to be a simple configuration glitch. If version upgrades run any sort of malware check on %USERPROFILE%, I wonder if there'd be any correlation with having .EXEs, .COMs, .DLLs, .OCXs or any script files in Documents or anything with DRM issues in Pictures or Videos.

Please MS, just go to a single annual update, which will give you more time to squash bugs. You're playing with people's systems here by pushing out these updates before they're ready. However, it only contained my Lightroom catalog and backups, which were themselves backed up elsewhere (thanks BackBlaze!).
