iOS 12.1 Public Beta 3 Is Here To Make Your Life A Mystery

What lies inside Public Beta 3? Only Tim Cook knows.

OK, so maybe iOS 12.1 Public Beta 3 isn't going to take you on a fanciful journey where every turn is a surprise. But given that Apple still isn't publishing release notes for its iOS 12.1 betas, your guess is as good as mine as to what's being done behind the scenes.

This point-one release has been rather robust already, so I'm not surprised to see the new feature train slowing down a bit. With a projected release of later this month, it's time for Apple developers to stop throwing in new bits of code and focus on making sure things are stable.

What's Fixed

The big news from last week, namely, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max charging issues, were rolled into iOS 12.0.1 . Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity issues were also fixed in that update, so if you were previously affected, make sure you test your device. Those fixes are definitely a part of iOS 12.1. If you've enrolled your iPad in the Public Beta Program, you'll notice that the '?123' button has shifted back to its proper position as well (courtesy of iOS 12.0.1).

What's New

Other than last week's emojis, there's nothing new for testers to sink their teeth into. I've heard very little about Group FaceTime since it reappeared in Public Beta 1, so I'm assuming the stability issues that plagued it during the iOS 12 Public Beta have been resolved. Either that or no one can connect long enough to try it out.

What's Next

The iPhone XR release is around the corner and Apple is busy putting their latest (and greatest?) bit of hardware through the crucible with iOS 12.1. As a result, we likely won't see any future beta changes on our iPhones because they aren't for our iPhones.

With the most exciting part of the iOS 12.1 Public Beta behind us, it's time to sit back and wait for the final release. Unless some major security issue pops up between now and the end of October, I imagine we'll see a wave of stability releases after this one, with no real features or fixes to find, just back end code tweaks.

Exciting, eh? See you in a week for iOS 12.1 Public Beta 4.
