Review: Wirelessly charge AirPods with HyperJuice’s handy adapter [Video]

With the current state of the Apple AirPods still uncertain, the HyperJuice Wireless Charger adapter presents an alternative method that lets your wirelessly charge AirPods. Yes, indeed, it’s a wireless charging case for your charging case. Absurd? Slightly, but nonetheless, it may prove to be convenient for those that have gone all in on wireless charging.

The HyperJuice Wireless Charger adapter is essentially a dock for your AirPods charging case that lends it wireless charging capabilities. The adapter features a Lightning connector inside that connects to your AirPods Charging Case when it’s snapped inside. This design allows the adapter to supply the AirPods Charging Case with enough power via a Qi wireless charger to fully charge the case in 1.5 hours.

Note: the proper way to insert the AirPods inside the HyperJuice adapter is like I have it in the photo above. The AirPods can be inserted either way, but the right way is to have the hinge and button facing outward. This nullifies my complaints in the video about the hinge not fully opening. It’s a bit confusing due to the FCC wording, but nonetheless, this is the right way.

The design of Hyper’s adapter allows the AirPods Charging Case to be easily inserted and removed. As it connects with the Lightning connector inside, the AirPods Charging Case will snap into place with a satisfying click. Users will no doubt appreciate the thumb notch that allows for easy case removal, and the rubber bumpers inside the adapter to soften the impact of insertion.

On the bottom of the HyperJuice Wireless Charger adapter, you’ll find a single LED. Hyper notes that it emits a green color when fully charged, and an orange LED when charging, but my LED was always green regardless.

The adapter will work with any Qi-certified wireless charger, and I tested it with both my Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging Pad and my Mophie Wireless Charging Base. Each Qi-enabled pad let me wirelessly charge AirPods with zero issues.

When charging AirPods via Hyper’s adapter, I was able to charge the case to full in about 1 hour 37 minutes, right in the ballpark of the company’s claims. Considering that the AirPods Charging Case takes about an hour to charge with a direct Lightning cable connection, I’d say the performance is good.

9to5Mac’s take

This certainly isn’t the type of solution we thought would be necessary in late 2018, but there’s still no sign if or when the the AirPods Wireless Charging Case or the corresponding AirPower Wireless Charging Pad will become available.

For those who want to wirelessly charge AirPods, Hyper’s solution, although a bit bulky and somewhat ironic, is your best bet. The fact that it’s literally a wireless charging case to charge your charging case makes using it feel a little silly, but if you’ve fully embraced the idea of wireless chargers, then its convenience may overshadow the fact that this isn’t exactly the product we thought we’d be needing at this juncture.

I see this case as being more of a Lightning cable alternative, that is, something that you only use when needing to charge your AirPods. I wouldn’t use it as a permanent fixture on my AirPods Charging Case.
