The issue is no longer there in Windows 10 19H1

A bug in Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) removes the file overwrite warning for archives, leading to what many have called a potential loss of data.

And while the warning doesn’t show up when extracting a file from an archive to a location where another file with the same name already exists on Windows 10 version 1809, it looks like the bug no longer exists in preview builds of the next Windows 10 update.

Codenamed Windows 10 19H1, which is an indication regarding its launch date, this major OS feature update does display a warning when overwriting files, as you can see in the attached screenshot.

The test was performed on Windows 10 build 18234 that was shipped by Microsoft to Windows insiders in the Skip Ahead ring in early September.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the bug in Windows 10 version 1809, but judging from the number of reports making the rounds lately, the issue happens on most computers already updated to this new release.

Windows 10 version 1809 rollout on hold

On the other hand, Microsoft has no reason to work around the clock on a potential fix because the rollout of the October 2018 Update has already been halted after the company discovered a major data removal bug in the original RTM build.

Nobody can download version 1809 right now, and this file overwrite issue was discovered by users who actually managed to update their systems in the few days of availability. This means the number of machines potentially affected by the problem is likely small, though it goes without saying that a fix is still needed.

Microsoft could resume the rollout of the October update anytime soon and hopefully a fix for this new bug would be included. No ETA has been provided until now.
