iPad Pro Leak Reveals Gorgeous All-Screen Design In Greatest Detail Yet

This article is more than 5 years old.

It's just a matter of hours, fewer than 48 of them, in fact, until Apple reveals everything at its "There's More in the Making" event in Brooklyn. Although the broad strokes of what's going to be announced have been clear for a while, more details have dripped out on a near-daily basis.

Apple

Like today's revelation from the eagle-eyed Guilherme Rambo at 9to5Mac who can read the internals of code more effectively than I can read the time.

He previously spotted an icon in an iOS 12 beta which suggested an all-screen, almost bezel-free design.

He then found a line of code that seemed to confirm there was no home button on the upcoming iPad.

Oh, Guilherme, this must mean you've wrung every drop of revelation from the code, surely?

But no.

A few days ago, he spotted something which solved one of the mysteries of the iPad Pro rumors that had gone before. This concerned how Face ID could possibly be on a tablet which, at least some of the time, would be in landscape orientation.

If you've ever tried to unlock an iPhone X holding it sideways, you'd know it can't be done. If the iPad Pro is in faux- laptop mode with a keyboard, what are you to do, swivel your head over like a loon, every time you wanted to get back to work? Rambo found the answer and revealed it in his Twitter feed.

So, there we are, it'll work in landscape, too. Versatile!

Though, please note, he thinks this does not mean you'll be able to do the same on the iPhone even after a software update. And he explains that you'll need to set Face ID up in portrait mode before it works in other orientations.

And now, at 9to5Mac, Guilherme has added to his list of exclusives for the site.  Buried in the iOS software is an image which shows the iPad Pro in the most detail we've yet seen.

The previous iOS hint was a tiny icon to be used in the battery widget.

But now, much more is visible.

9to5Mac

The new icon sleuthed out by Rambo shows a simple graphic, but, oh boy, does it augur well for a stunning-looking tablet? There's no notch, presumably because the top bezel is capacious enough to accommodate the TrueDepth camera sensor, and that bezel fits round the display with perfect evenness.

The bezel is certainly thick, but being an icon, this may be descriptive rather than perfectly accurate. I personally don't expect it to be as thick as this on the actual physical object.

And it's worth noting that there are two other elements sketched out on this icon: the pair of volume buttons and the sleep/wake button. Both are in the identical positions to where they fall on current iPads.

Some have been surprised that the sleep/wake button hasn't crept round to the long side of the device as it has on the iPhone. But to imagine that this would happen is to misunderstand Apple.

9to5Mac

The sleep/wake button moved to the side of the iPhone when the phone got bigger and it needed to be as easy as possible to reach, especially if you're using the phone one-handed.

There is no similar need on a tablet, and Apple's always has ergonomics front of mind. The only reason it might move, I'd say, is to invoke Siri. But, in physical terms, there's very little difference between the gesture needed for tablet interaction between top and side buttons.

Finally, Guilherme believes there will be a new Apple Pencil, also revealed on Twitter.

I think this is right and the only reason there have been no leaks is because it'll look the same (except for a USB-C connector hidden under the cap, probably). It will support gestures, he believes, as you can see below.

Not long to wait now.
