During Apple's “More in the Making” event on Tuesday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City, CEO Tim Cook announced that the Cupertino company hit a new major milestone: 100 million active Macs worldwide.

"Apple’s focus has always been on providing people the tools to unleash their creativity," said Cook. And the Mac was the first computer that was designed for creativity and it’s become one of the world’s most essential creative tools."

51% of Mac buyers are new to the Mac

Every quarter, Apple is shipping over 4 million Macs worldwide, according to IDC, bringing it's total active install base to 100 million Macs today.

Apple's market share of PC units shipped is about 7% globally and over 13% in the U.S.

"The Mac continues to attract so many customers," Cook added. "In fact over half (51%) of Mac buyers worldwide are new to Mac and that number is at a remarkable 76% in China."

However, just to put this in perspective, there are 1.5 billion active Windows PCs worldwide, of which more than 700 million are already running the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, Windows 10, according to the latest numbers published by the software giant.
