It seems Spotify is finally gearing up to deliver the one feature iPhone fans have been calling for: Apple Watch support.
Screenshots from a preview version of the app have been posted online ahead of its official release. They suggest the wearable component will allow users to navigate their playlists, control music playback, and even stream to other devices.
Apple Watch has been around for four years now, and Spotify still hasn’t provided iPhone users with a way to enjoy it on their Apple Watch. You can control playback using Apple’s own controls, but you can’t navigate playlists or download tracks for offline listening.
Last year, when Spotify last commented on an Apple Watch app, it didn’t rule it out — but it did say its status was “not right now.” It added, “if we have any public news about Spotify on Apple Watch we will announce it on our News Blog first.”
There has been no announcement yet, but it looks like progress is being made.
Spotify for Apple Watch appears in beta build
One user, who has access to Spotify’s beta releases through TestFlight, has discovered an Apple Watch component in the latest preview build. Screenshots uploaded to Imgur prove it’s real and indicate exactly what it will do.
The watchOS app can only be used to navigate playlists and control playback for now, however. There is no support for downloading tracks just yet, though this will surely be added later should the Apple Watch app stick around.
Without confirmation from Spotify, there’s still a chance the app will be scrapped before it ever makes its debut. But this is certainly a promising discovery for Spotify fans using an iPhone.
